Ounasvaara is the hill on the edge of Rovaniemi with a small ski resort on it, and it suits a visitor who wants an hour or a day of skiing without leaving town. Buy an hour's ticket rather than a day's if you only want to try it. It is not a reason to choose Rovaniemi for a ski holiday – the big fell resorts are elsewhere in Lapland – and in summer it turns into a bobsleigh track and a bike park.
Ounasvaara is the hill you see from the centre of Rovaniemi, and its name turns
up everywhere: on hotel addresses, ski maps and the pickup lists of tour
operators. Most pages mention it in passing. Here is what it actually is.
A town ski resort
The resort on its slopes is small by Lapland standards and close at hand: the
operator describes it as almost in the centre of the city, with eleven slopes
and five lifts. The winter season runs from 11 November 2026 to 17 April
2027.1
That combination is the point. You do not need a skiing holiday to ski here,
just an afternoon.

Who it suits
A visitor in Rovaniemi for a week, with one day free of tours, who wants to ski
or let the children try. A family that wants an outdoor afternoon close to the
hotel. Someone whose tour has been cancelled and who still wants to be outside.
It suits less well a keen skier, for whom the fell resorts are built: the
choice between them and Rovaniemi is set out in
Rovaniemi or somewhere else in Lapland.
In summer
The hill does not close with the snow. It runs a summer bobsleigh track and a
chair lift to the top, and a bike park with marked downhill and mountain-bike
trails.1Lapland in summer covers what else stays open
when the snow has gone.
The resort lists ski and snowboard rental and a ski school among its services, so a first lesson is possible without bringing anything. Whether a day is enough depends on the person; what Ounasvaara offers is an easy way to find out, with an hour's ticket and slopes close to town, before committing to a skiing holiday somewhere bigger. Book the lesson before the ticket, since the lesson decides the time.
Is it open in December, in the dark weeks?
Yes: the resort's winter season runs from 11 November 2026 to 17 April 2027, which covers the darkest weeks around Christmas. In those weeks there is very little daylight, so check the opening hours for the day you want rather than assuming them, and dress for the cold that comes with standing in a lift queue in the evening.
What is there to do in summer?
The hill turns into a summer activity park. The resort runs a summer bobsleigh track down the hill and a chair lift to the top, and a bike park with marked downhill and mountain-bike trails, fat bikes and a dirt track for children. Those make Ounasvaara one of the few things in Rovaniemi that is built for the snow-free months rather than closed during them.
Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
Rovaniemi's winter tours do sell out – December and the week around New Year first, and the small-group ones before the rest. Booking here goes straight to the operator at their own published price, and the code LH10 takes 10% off it.
