Private snowmobile tour in Kemi: what each option keeps to yourselves

The short answer

For a couple or a small group of adults who want to drive the sea ice with nobody else, book the tour that is sold only as private. For a party that would rather sit warm and look out, ask the Kemi safari house for its private ride in the heated sled. If all you want is not to share a machine, pay the solo supplement on a shared ride instead.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Where these figures come from
  • Private sea-ice tour: A company that sells nothing but private tours on the frozen sea, starting near Kemi or at Kuivaniemi, for up to six adults driving.
  • Heated glass-roofed sled: The Kemi safari house's private ride on request: you sit in a heated sled with a clear roof while a snowmobile pulls it across the bay.
  • Solo machine, night ride: A shared night ride with a snowmobile to yourself, as the Kemi agency prices it: your own machine, other guests on the same trail.

Near Kemi, private can mean the whole tour, the sled you sit in, or only the machine you drive. Each costs something different.

A tour for your party alone

One company sells nothing but private tours on the frozen sea, for up to six adults driving, starting near Kemi or at Kuivaniemi, half an hour south. Two people pay from 285 euros together and can swap the driving; getting to the start is up to you, and nobody under twelve is taken.1

A sled you sit in

The safari house in Kemi runs a private ride on request in a heated sled with a glass roof, towed across the bay by a snowmobile.2 You watch the ice rather than drive it. The operator prints no price or length, so this is the one to ask about with your dates and party size in hand.

A machine to yourself

On the shared rides, paying to drive alone buys a snowmobile, not privacy. The Kemi agency prices the night ride at 170 euros each for two sharing a machine and 230 for one driving alone.3 The group and the guide stay the same.

The shared rides themselves are compared on snowmobile safaris in Kemi, and the Tornio options on private snowmobile tours in Tornio.

Questions people ask

What would we owe for damage on each?

The private tour near Kemi prints a deductible of 1,300 euros per driver. The Kemi agency that resells the shared rides caps the driver's liability at 800 euros per person, per snowmobile and per accident. On the heated sled you do not drive, and no figure is printed. Check your travel insurance before you ride, since these sums are what it would have to cover.

Is there a private tour from Tornio instead?

Not as a product. The Tornio company that runs sea-ice and wilderness rides says it serves individuals, groups and companies, and prints a price for a machine to yourself, but no price for a private departure. From Tornio the private tour near Kemi starts at least 21 minutes' drive away; ask the Tornio company for a quote before you settle.

How long is the heated sled ride?

The operator does not say. A reseller that sells it describes a ride across the frozen bay with a 30-minute picnic inside the heated sled on the ice, starting from the safari house in Kemi, with pickup from selected hotels in Kemi and Tornio-Haparanda. Treat that as a guide and confirm the length and the price with the safari house when you ask for a date.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
