Reindeer farm visits and sleigh rides in Levi

The short answer

Choose on the length of the sleigh ride, which the listings print in the small type, not on the length of the tour. The cheapest tickets buy a short loop and a warm drink; the dearer one buys a proper ride through the forest and time with the young animals. All four collect you from Levi. If the reindeer themselves matter more than the ride, a farm visit without a sleigh is a different and longer outing.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Keo Wilderness: 800 mPolar Lights Tours: about 1 kmLovimainas: 1.5 kmPolar Star Travel: 3 km
Price €89 €88 – the lowest price per person €109 €175

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest price per person. All four listings price per person and include the transfer from Levi, so neither is a row. The sleigh ride is left unmarked: a longer ride costs more, and for a small child the short loop may be the better buy.

Where these figures come from
  • Keo Wilderness: 800 m: The shortest ride of the four, led by a herder the listing describes as Sámi, with a visit to the operator's husky kennel in the same hour. The only one here to publish a group cap.
  • Polar Lights Tours: about 1 km: The cheapest ticket, and a short forest loop with a hot drink afterwards. The listing's web address says fifteen kilometres; the page itself says about one, and that is the figure used here.
  • Lovimainas: 1.5 km: A longer ride, with a kota to warm up in afterwards. The only one of the four with a written rule for extreme cold.
  • Polar Star Travel: 3 km: The longest ride by some way and twice the price of the short loops, with feeding the young reindeer after it. The one to book if the ride itself is the point rather than the photograph.

Most reindeer listings around Levi show the same picture: a sleigh, a blanket, a reindeer in harness and a snowy forest. The prices underneath run from under €90 to €175, and the tour lengths from one hour to two, which makes the dearer ones look like a longer version of the same thing. They are not quite. The difference sits in one line of each description, the length of the sleigh ride itself, and it runs from 800 metres to three kilometres.

The table compares four operators on that and on what else each ticket holds. All four are sold on GetYourGuide, all four price per person and all four include the transfer from Levi.

The short rides: a first meeting

Keo Wilderness and Polar Lights Tours sell the two shortest rides, and they are the cheapest tickets. At this length the sleigh is a few minutes of the hour; the rest is getting there, getting settled and a warm drink afterwards. That is not a criticism. For a family with small children, or anyone who mainly wants to be close to a reindeer and come away with a photograph, a short loop is the right amount.

Keo adds something the others do not: its hour includes a visit to the operator’s husky kennel. If you were going to book a separate kennel visit for the dogs, this covers both animals in one outing, briefly.

The longer rides: a trip through the forest

Lovimainas doubles the distance of the shortest loop for about €20 more, on land it describes itself as the custodian of, with nothing subcontracted. It is the middle choice and, for a couple without children, probably the best balance of ride and price here.

Polar Star Travel’s three-kilometre ride is twice the length of the next longest here. It is also the dearest ticket by a clear margin, and it finishes with the chance to feed the young reindeer. Book it if the ride is the reason you are going.

What the listings do not tell you

None of the four says how many people share a sleigh, and only Keo publishes a group limit. On a short loop that can matter: with a large group, part of the hour may go on waiting for your turn. Ask when you book.

For what a reindeer farm visit includes and what a ride adds to it, the Rovaniemi reindeer farm guide sets it out in full, and the distinction is the same here. The other activities around the resort are on the Levi destination page.

One reindeer tour for each purpose, including a farm without a sleigh and the days that add a snowmobile, is named in the best reindeer tour in Levi.

A reindeer visit that sells its buildings as much as its animals, with a museum and a lasso inside the two hours, is about an hour up the road on reindeer farm in Muonio.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Is there a farm visit without a sleigh ride?

Yes, and it is a different kind of morning. Soma Adventures runs a four-hour outing to its own reindeer farm on a private lake about 35 minutes from Levi, with snowshoeing and a snack by the fire, for €189 a person. Its listing talks about hundreds of reindeer and says nothing about a sleigh ride, and it does not take children under 13. It suits adults who want to see how a herd is kept rather than be pulled along a track.

What happens in very hard frost?

Lovimainas is the one operator of the four that prints a rule for it: at minus 30 °C or colder the ride is moved to another day. The others do not say. It is worth asking what the operator you book does before a cold snap rather than on the morning, when the answer matters most.

Can we feed reindeer as part of a Santa visit instead?

Two of the Santa programmes in Levi include it. Arcandia's Elf Court lists feeding the reindeer among its activities, and Arctic Shaman Adventures' private Santa meeting includes it as well. Neither is a reindeer tour, and the time with the animals is a small part of the afternoon, but for a family doing Santa anyway it can make a separate reindeer trip unnecessary. The Santa options are compared in the guide to meeting Santa Claus in Levi.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
