Santa Claus in Ruka: where to meet him

The short answer

Book the morning at Santa's cottage near Kuusamo: transfers are included, the youngest go free, and it is the shortest trip from the resort. The afternoon at the Arctic Circle in Salla is the alternative if the cottage's days do not fit. The full day to Rovaniemi is for a family that wants to see the village there as well, and is a long day in the car.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

No row is ranked: the two local programmes cost the same, and the day trip pays for the drive to Rovaniemi rather than for Santa.

Where these figures come from
  • Santa's cottage, Kuusamo: A morning at a country house near Kuusamo with a sled slope, a campfire and gingerbread baking with Santa and Mrs Claus, transfers included.
  • Arctic Circle, Salla: An afternoon at a café on the Arctic Circle in Salla, with a family meeting and photo, gingerbread decorating and round-trip transport from Ruka.
  • Day trip to Rovaniemi: A full day by car from Ruka or Kuusamo to Santa Claus Village, where meeting Santa is itself free.

Near Ruka, Santa is met in two places, neither of them on the booking platforms.

Santa’s cottage near Kuusamo

Pohjolan Pirtti & Kievari, a country house near Kuusamo, runs a morning at Santa’s cottage on Thursdays and Saturdays from late November to late March: a sled slope, a campfire and gingerbread baking with Santa and Mrs Claus, with transfers and presents for the children in the price.1 The house’s own page says the cottage runs weekly until the end of March.2

The Arctic Circle in Salla

Napapiiri Café in Salla runs an afternoon with a family meeting and photo, a guided tour of its Santa’s village and gingerbread decorating, with transport there and back from Ruka. When we read the resort’s listing it still showed last season’s dates, so check this winter’s before planning around it.3 The programme itself is described on Santa Claus in Salla.

A day in Rovaniemi

The only Santa product sold from Ruka on the booking platforms is a full day by car to Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, where the meeting itself is free.4 What the free meeting involves is on meeting Santa Claus in Rovaniemi.

Choosing

The cottage is the one to book: it is closest, the transfer is included, and a child under three goes free. The Salla afternoon is the fallback if the cottage’s two days do not fit your week. Rovaniemi is worth the day only for a family that wants to see the village as well.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

How far ahead do we need to book?

The resort's listing for Santa's cottage asks you to book well in advance, and bookings through Ruka's own service generally close at four in the afternoon the day before. December fills first, so if the cottage matters to the children, book it before the rest of the week, then fit the skiing around it.

Do the grown-ups pay the same as the children?

At the cottage, yes: the price is printed per person with children up to two free, and the resort's listing gives no separate adult or child price. The Salla afternoon is priced the same way. Budget for everyone except the smallest child, and ask whether a baby needs a seat in the transfer vehicle.

Is there anything Christmassy to do on the other days?

Pohjolan Pirtti, the house that runs the cottage, also sells a Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinner at which Santa calls in, and a personalised video greeting from Santa and Mrs Claus. Its page prints no prices for either, so ask when you book the cottage whether they can be added on.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
