The short answer

For the lowest bill, take the Thursday trip on the village lake in Äkäslompolo, or the short walk onto Lake Ylläsjärvi if you are staying there. If your older child is over twelve, the walk-in introduction may cost the family less, because it keeps the child fare to fourteen. Pay for the Luosujärvi trip when you want lunch and a longer day included.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: lowest adult fare, lowest child fare and lowest family total. Holiday weeks are 13 December to 3 January and 31 January to 28 February. The per-hour row carries no mark because one trip's length is a range.

Where these figures come from
  • Village lake, Äkäslompolo: Two hours on the lake in the village on Thursday afternoons, clothing lent, pick-up free there.
  • Walk onto Lake Ylläsjärvi: An hour and a half with the transfer in Ylläsjärvi, the clothing and a hot drink included.
  • Walk-in introduction: About two and a half hours with a child fare up to fourteen, dearer in the holiday weeks.
  • Lake Luosujärvi by car: Three hours or more with the drive, a net demonstration and a soup lunch in a café.

What ice fishing in Ylläs costs a family depends mainly on the length of the trip and on how old the children are.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Is there a child fare on the hidden lakes day?

No. The five-hour hidden lakes trip is priced at 145 euros a person, or 165 in the holiday weeks, with no separate child fare printed. For a family of four that comes to 580 euros, or 660, so it suits families with older children who will fish all day.

Can we cancel if the weather turns?

The Äkäslompolo company lets you cancel free until four in the afternoon the day before. The Konijänkkä operator takes a 20 per cent deposit and allows no cancellation in the last ten days. The Ylläsjärvi company's own page prints no rule, so ask before paying.

What does getting there add?

The Äkäslompolo company collects free in its village and charges 25 euros a person return from Ylläsjärvi, for four or more. The Ylläsjärvi walk includes transfers in Ylläsjärvi. The Konijänkkä operator does not list transfers for fishing, so ask whether it collects.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
