The short answer

If you want Santa to yourselves without leaving the fells, book the private visit near Pyhä: it is for your party alone and each child gets a small gift, but it is priced per visit, so it suits a larger family or two families together. If you would rather meet Santa without a booking, or make a day of it, plan a day in Rovaniemi, which the resort bus reaches.

Pyhä and Luosto sell one Santa programme, a private visit near Pyhä. For a family that wants more choice, or a visit without a booking, the answer is still a day in Rovaniemi.

The private visit near Pyhä

Kairankutsu takes one party at a time from its husky farm near Pyhä by sledge, pulled by a snowmobile, to Santa’s camp in the forest, where he greets everyone and gives each child a small gift. The visit lasts 45 minutes and costs 399 euros for up to eight people, and the operator passes on anything you tell it about the children, from a best friend’s name to a favourite subject, so that Santa knows it.1

How far Rovaniemi is

Luosto’s own travel page puts the transfer from Rovaniemi at about an hour and a half, and says the bus to the Pyhä-Luosto area runs four times a day in winter.2 That is a comfortable day trip: out in the morning, Santa before lunch, back in the afternoon.

What to plan

The Rovaniemi guide sets out the choice there in full, from the free visit to the paid programmes: meeting Santa Claus in Rovaniemi. The one thing to decide before you go is whether you want the free walk-in visit or a booked programme, because only the second needs a reservation.

Keep the rest of the day light. Three hours on the road and a visit in between is enough for small children, and the husky farm or the reindeer park can wait for a day at home on the fells.

The rest of the area is on the Pyhä-Luosto destination page.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Can Santa come to our cottage instead?

The same operator sells a visit from Santa at your accommodation, but its booking page showed neither a price nor dates when we read it, so ask the operator directly. It is also worth asking what happens if the visit has to move, because the forest visit is charged in full when cancelled within seven days.

Can we get to Rovaniemi without a car?

Yes. The resort's own site says the bus between Rovaniemi and the Pyhä-Luosto area runs four times a day in winter, and that some departures connect with flights at Rovaniemi airport. Check the current timetable before you go, and plan the return first: the last bus back matters more than the first one out.

Where do we buy bus tickets?

Online, before you travel. The resort's bus page links to the Matkahuolto online shop for the routes between Rovaniemi airport or railway station and Luosto, with payment by Visa or Mastercard, and publishes a separate winter timetable for the season from 10 November 2026 to 2 May 2027. Buy the return leg at the same time so that the day has a fixed end.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
