The short answer

The cheapest evening is also the one for a family: a fire a short drive from the village at 70 euros, with children of four to fourteen at half and a toddler at no charge, which makes 175 euros for two adults, a six-year-old and a three-year-old. Every other evening here starts at twelve, fifteen or 120 centimetres, and the snowmobile evening costs more than twice the fire per hour.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest adult price and the lowest price per hour. All four price per person. Lapland Safaris' child fares appear on its pages only when children are added to the participants, and the family row uses them; the marketplace listing shows one price and no age.

Where these figures come from
  • Lapland Safaris: fire by the road: The lowest price and the lowest hour, with sausages by a fire a short drive out. All ages, a child fare of 35 euros and nothing under four; Tuesdays at eight.
  • Lapland Safaris: snowshoes: Half price for a child of twelve to fourteen, and the one evening here whose January price moved: 24 euros lower for an adult and child from the 7th.
  • Suomen Elämysravintolat: snowcat dinner: A buffet on the fell top with the snowcat ride both ways, about fifteen minutes each. One price per person and no age in our record.
  • Lapland Safaris: snowmobile: The highest price and the dearest hour, and the only one with no child fare at all: nobody under fifteen.

Aurora evenings at Ylläs are unusually alike in length: four of the five here last two and a half hours, and the snowmobile safari three. That makes the prices easy to read against each other, and it leaves the child fares doing most of the work for a family.

What an hour under the sky costs

The fire evening a short drive from the village is 70 euros, 28 an hour. The snowshoe hunt is 40.40 an hour, the snowcat dinner on the fell top 51.60 and the ice float 55.20. The snowmobile safari, at 182 euros for three hours, costs 60.67 an hour, more than twice the fire evening. What the extra buys is the machine, the suit or the dinner, not more time out.

Which evening a family can book

Only the fire evening takes small children: Lapland Safaris lists it for all ages, charges 35 euros from four to fourteen, half the adult price, and nothing under four. Two adults with a six-year-old and a three-year-old pay 175 euros. The snowshoe hunt starts at twelve and charges 51 euros for a child of twelve to fourteen, so the same two adults with two teenagers pay 304 there and 210 on the fire evening. The snowmobile safari takes nobody under fifteen and prints no child fare, and the ice float asks for 120 centimetres of height rather than an age.

The January dates that moved

Of the Lapland Safaris evenings, only the snowshoe hunt changed price in the month we read: one adult and one child cost 176 euros on 1 and 5 January and 152 from the 7th. The snowmobile evening showed 182 euros on every date.

What each evening actually is, and what happens if the sky stays empty, is compared on the northern lights at Ylläs, the snowmobile evenings on aurora snowmobile tours at Ylläs, and the rest of the resort on the Ylläs destination page.

What a minute on the sled costs on each ride, and what both sellers charge for a child, is worked out in husky safari prices at Ylläs.

Questions people ask

Which evenings can a five-year-old join?

One of the four in the table: the fire evening, which Lapland Safaris lists for all ages and charges 35 euros for a child of four to fourteen. The snowshoe hunt is recommended from twelve, the snowmobile safari takes nobody under fifteen, and the ice float sets a minimum height of 120 centimetres rather than an age. The snowcat dinner gives no age in our record.

Do the prices change through January?

On one of them. Lapland Safaris' snowshoe hunt cost 176 euros for an adult and a child on 1 and 5 January but 152 from the 7th. Its snowmobile evening showed the same 182 euros on every January date we saw. The marketplace listings show a starting price rather than a calendar, so check your own date before comparing.

Is the dearest evening the longest?

No. All four last about two and a half hours, except the snowmobile safari at three, so the price differences buy the activity rather than the time. That is why the per-hour row moves so little from the price row here, unlike resorts where an eight-hour hunt sits beside a two-hour walk.

Lapland Handbook Staff

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
