Santa Claus from Kemi

The short answer

Plan a day inland. No Santa programme was found on sale in Kemi, and the icebreaker cruise, for all its Santa branding, does not list a meeting with him. Ylitornio, Ranua and Rovaniemi each have a Santa to visit, at similar distances by car, so choose by the kind of visit rather than the drive. Leave early and keep the rest of that day light.

Kemi sells snowmobile rides on the frozen sea, husky and reindeer outings and the icebreaker cruise, but not a meeting with Santa. For a family here, Santa means a drive inland.

The icebreaker and Santa

The Sampo icebreaker is marketed as the official icebreaker of Santa Claus, and the name can set expectations. The cruise page lists what the ticket includes, from ice floating to a diploma, and a meeting with Santa is not on the list.1 Book the cruise for the sea ice, not for Santa.

Where the nearest visits are

Three places within an hour and a half have one. Ylitornio, 68 minutes away, has a Santa station with a day ticket and a riverside house that receives one family at a time. Ranua, 82 minutes away, has a sleigh ride through the forest to Santa’s cabin from December to mid-March. Rovaniemi, 87 minutes away, has Santa’s office, which is free and open all year.

What to plan

Which of the three suits which family is on the best Santa Claus visit from Kemi, and what each costs is on Santa Claus prices from Kemi. If Rovaniemi is the choice, meeting Santa Claus in Rovaniemi explains how the visit works there.

The rest of the town is on the Kemi destination page.

Questions people ask

Does Santa sail on the icebreaker?

Not according to the cruise page. It calls Sampo the official icebreaker of Santa Claus, and lists what the cruise includes: ice floating, a walk on the frozen sea, a guided tour on board, a welcome drink, a diploma and entry to the SnowCastle exhibitions, with lunch on the afternoon cruise. A meeting with Santa is not among them.

Is there really no Santa in Kemi?

None was found for sale. Our survey of the booking platforms in September 2026 listed husky, reindeer, snowmobile, aurora and ice fishing outings for Kemi, as well as the icebreaker, and no Santa programme, and the town's own tourism site lists none either. If Santa matters to the trip, plan a day in Ylitornio, Ranua or Rovaniemi rather than hoping for something local.

Could we combine Rovaniemi with the icebreaker?

Not on the same day with small children. The icebreaker company runs its own shuttle from Rovaniemi, which leaves at a quarter to six in the morning for the cruise in Kemi, so the two are separate days. If both matter, give each its own day and keep the evenings free.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
