The short answer

For a family or a small group, ask Salla Wilderness Park through its enquiry form whether its reindeer safari, by day or after dark, can run for your party alone. For a longer day that reaches a herd by snowmobile, ask Sallatunturin Tuvat for its farm safari as a bespoke trip. Ask both for one total.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Nothing is ranked: neither company prices a private reindeer outing, so the table shows the way to ask and what it would be built on.

Where these figures come from
  • Salla Wilderness Park: Runs reindeer safaris by day and after dark from four guests, each adult on a sleigh, with enquiries by form.
  • Sallatunturin Tuvat: Runs a snowmobile safari to a reindeer farm and says it organises bespoke safaris to your wishes.

A private reindeer outing in Salla has to be asked for, and the two companies that run reindeer trips have different doors.

At the wilderness park

Salla Wilderness Park puts each adult on a sleigh of their own, with children riding with a parent, but runs its safaris for groups of four to twenty.1 A family of four fills the minimum on its own, which makes the question of a private departure a short one to ask.

At the fell resort

Sallatunturin Tuvat says it organises bespoke safaris tailored to your wishes,2 and its farm safari is the one that reaches reindeer.

Questions people ask

Could a private outing be at night?

The park already runs a reindeer ride after dark, through forest and swamp to a fire, from December to March. It is the obvious one to ask for as a private evening, since the aurora is part of it. Name it in your enquiry, with a first and a reserve date in case the first night is cloudy.

Would a private outing let us stay longer with the reindeer?

That is the point of asking. The shared safari keeps a timetable of about three hours; a private one could add time at the corral or a longer picnic in the hut. The park's one-day safari already runs five to six hours, so for a long private day, ask for that one.

What would it cost?

Neither company publishes a figure. The park's shared safari costs 116 euros per adult with children from three to twelve at half, and needs four guests, so a private one for a small party is likely to cost at least four places. Ask for one total before you commit.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
