Private ice fishing in Muonio: what the one private trip offers

The short answer

Book the small company's heated-tent trip if you want the ice to yourselves: it takes private groups of two to five, three to four hours, by snowmobile and sled, with a wood-burning stove in the tent and lunch as an extra. Its sales open closer to winter and no price was published when this page was written, so ask for the group price and read the cancellation scale before you pay.

Among the ice fishing trips near Muonio, one is sold as private, and it is private by design rather than as an upgrade.

Who it is for

The company works only with private groups of two to five,1 so a couple or a small family has the guide, the snowmobile, the sled and the tent to itself.

What you get

Three to four hours, the ride out by snowmobile and sled to the spot the guide rates best, and a spacious tent heated by a wood-burning stove, where you can fish indoors in a snowstorm. Lunch can be added, and thermal clothing rented.2 What it costs is the gap: the company says it opens its winter sales closer to the season.

What cancelling costs

The terms keep five per cent of the booking if you cancel more than 30 days ahead, half between 30 and 7 days, and all of it inside the last week.3 Book when your dates are firm.

The shared trips, with their prices, are on ice fishing in Muonio and ice fishing in Ylläs.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Where does the private trip start?

At the company's reception in Muotkavaara, unless you are staying in one of its own cabins, in which case the transport is included and you meet in front of the reception. Its listing on the area's tourism site gives its address as Pallaksentie in Muonio. If you are staying elsewhere, confirm the meeting point and time when you book.

Could the resort run its ice fishing just for our family?

Its description gives the group as two to twenty and says nothing about a private version; it runs on a fixed weekly programme. The resort has a sales team for groups and companies, so it can be asked, but nothing on its pages says whether it would or what it would cost. The heated tent is the only trip read here that is private as standard.

Who can make the booking?

The company's terms say it sells to customers of legal age, eighteen and over in Finland, and to businesses, and that prices include VAT and may change. Changes and cancellations have to be sent by email, and the date the email is received is the cancellation date, so send it as early as you can.

Lapland Handbook Staff

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
