Private husky tour in Levi: how to have the dogs to yourselves

The short answer

If the dogs, the trail and the guide's attention should be yours alone, book the private ride at the small kennel north of Levi, and take the longer trail if the budget allows, since the drive out is the same. If what you want is only to avoid strangers, booking every place on a small shared ride gets you most of the way for less. Ask either operator about winter clothing before you go.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Private ride, 5 kmPrivate ride, 10 kmShared ride, booked out
Sold as private Yes – the kennel closed for one group Yes – the kennel closed for one group No
Price €2,067 per group €2,790 per group €150 per person

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the kennel closed for one group. Only the listings sold as private are marked. The private prices are for the group, but the listing does not say how many people they cover, so ask before comparing them with eight seats on the shared ride.

Where these figures come from
  • Private ride, 5 km: A small kennel north of Levi closed for your group, with transfers, a guide and a kota stop, priced for the party.
  • Private ride, 10 km: The same kennel and arrangement on the longer trail, for a higher price for the party.
  • Shared ride, booked out: A 5 km self-drive ride for at most eight, sold per seat; booking every place keeps strangers off it.

A private husky ride from Levi comes from one operator, and the kennel it uses is small enough that private means the whole place.

The kennel north of Levi

Scandinavian Travel Group, which has an office in Levi, sells private rides at Lapland Wild Witch, a kennel of about forty dogs at Tepasto, north of the resort. Your group has the kennel, the guide and the trail along a frozen river to itself, with transfers from your accommodation and a kota stop for berry juice.1 Each ride takes at most eight people in four sleds.2

Booking out a shared ride

Some Levi kennels sell self-drive rides by the seat, limited to eight participants. Booking every place on one, such as Levisafari’s five kilometre ride,3 keeps other guests out of your departure.

Questions people ask

Can a small child come on the private ride?

From about four, as a passenger. Each sled takes up to two adults and one small child under seven, and an adult must drive the whole route; the kennel does not recommend the ride for children under four. For a family with two young children, that means two sleds and two adult drivers, so count the adults before booking.

Is winter clothing lent?

The operator's pages disagree. The private ride's page says warm clothing is not included and can be rented at its shop in the centre of Levi, while its page for the shared ride at the same kennel says overalls, boots and mittens are handed out there. Ask when you book, and allow twenty minutes in the shop if you rent.

Does the private price change through the winter?

Yes. The kennel's rides have two price periods, one from December to the end of February and a second for March, so the figure in the table is where the listing starts. Ask for the total for your exact date and group, and whether it covers everyone who comes or only up to a set number.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
