The short answer

For a first go, book the kennel's ten-kilometre ride: two hours, and you drive the team yourselves. If Riisitunturi is why you came, take the twenty-kilometre ride into the park, which needs everyone to be eight or older. For a whole day, the thirty-kilometre trip. If nobody wants to drive, go to Ranua, where a musher drives and you sit.

Posio has a kennel of its own, beside Riisitunturi, that sells four rides on its own site and none through the booking platforms.1 Each suits a different party.

For a first ride

The ten-kilometre loop is two hours with the dogs, a stop halfway to swap drivers and a hot drink in a kota at the end. It is the shortest and cheapest thing the kennel sells, and the one that takes children from four.

For the national park

The kennel says it is the only company running dog sleds in Riisitunturi National Park.2 Its twenty-kilometre ride goes there, lasts about three and a half hours and ends with lunch. It is the reason to book in Posio rather than anywhere else.

For a whole day, or two

The thirty-kilometre trip fills six hours; the two-day adventure adds a night in a cabin and is run for your own group alone.

If nobody wants to drive

Every Posio ride puts one of each pair on the runners. The seated ride in Ranua, an hour away, is where a musher drives and you sit.

The farm, its location and the listing that looks local but is not are covered on husky safari in Posio.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

What if our group mixes confident and first-time drivers?

Every ride starts with the kennel's instructions on handling the team, and on the ten-kilometre loop you swap drivers halfway, so a nervous first-timer can sit for the first half. On the two longer rides the kennel prints a price for a sled without a passenger, 90 euros more than sharing, which lets the keenest driver take a team of their own.

Is the Posio kennel the same ride the booking platform lists under Posio?

No. The ride on the platform collects its guests in Rovaniemi and drives them to the park, as this site's base husky page for Posio explains. The kennel near Riisitunturi sells directly on its own site and does not include a transfer, so from a bed in Posio it is the shorter trip, provided you can get yourselves to the farm.

Can we book at short notice?

The kennel's own terms make changing your mind cheap: the whole price is refunded if you cancel at least 48 hours before the ride. It sells through its own booking page rather than a platform, so the quickest way to find a free team for a particular day is to ask the kennel directly once you know your dates.

Lapland Handbook Staff

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
