The short answer

Choose by the length of day you want rather than by the ticket, because the hourly cost varies far less than the ticket does. The three-hour small-group trip is the cheapest hour and the only one that prints a child fare, so it suits a family watching the total. A five-hour lake day costs a little more per hour but includes lunch, which the shorter trips leave you to find.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Small group, 3 hoursShort trip by carLake day by coachLake day by snowmobile
Adult ticket €99 – the lowest adult ticket €109 From €233 From €240

Child fare €79, ages 4–12 Not stated Sold, 4–14, not read Not stated

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest adult ticket and the lowest adult price per hour. Prices marked 'from' are the lowest each operator shows. A child fare 'not read' appears only once a child is added in the booking form.

Where these figures come from
  • Small group, 3 hours: Three hours on a forest lake with overalls and a hot drink, and a lower fare for children.
  • Short trip by car: Two and a half hours at a lake a short drive from the village, with warm clothes and a hot drink.
  • Lake day by coach: Five hours on a remote lake north of the village, with a thermal outfit and lunch by the fire.
  • Lake day by snowmobile: Five hours reaching a lake by shared snowmobile, with lunch and warm drinks.

Saariselkä’s ice fishing tickets look far apart until they are divided by the hours they buy.

The short trips

Arctic Timetravels’ three hours cost the least per hour of the four and come with overalls and a child fare,1 and Safartica’s shorter trip to a lake near the village costs more per hour.2 Neither includes a meal.

The lake days

Lapland Safaris’ coach trip and Wilderness Hotel Saariselkä’s snowmobile trip both last five hours and include lunch, and per hour they cost only a few euros more than Safartica’s short trip.34

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

What does a family of four pay?

Only the small-group trip can be totalled from its page: two adults and two children aged four to twelve pay 356 euros. The coach trip sells child fares for ages four to fourteen but shows them only in its booking form, and the other two print none, so ask them before you compare family totals.

Are there costs the ticket does not cover?

On all four the gear and the guide are included, and three lend winter clothing; the snowmobile trip does not list it, so ask. The snowmobile trip carries the extra risk of an excess if the machine is damaged, and its drivers need a licence. On the two shorter trips, plan a meal before or after, since only hot drinks are served on the ice.

Can we cancel if the weather turns?

The coach trip charges 25 euros per booking to cancel three days or more ahead and the full price after that. The trip sold on a booking platform follows the terms that platform shows when you book. The small-group trip and the hotel do not state terms on their activity pages, so ask before paying.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
