Ice fishing in Tornio: what the rapids change

The short answer

Book the guided two hours at the Kukkola rapids and ask the company to confirm the permit is covered. It is the cheapest ice fishing sold near Tornio, the equipment is included, and a guide shows you how to drill and bait. Do not go out on the river alone on the assumption that ice fishing is free: on this river the free single-rod rule has exceptions that apply to exactly this kind of place.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest price per person. All three price per person. The two Tornio outings are sold on the company's own site, the sea trip on a booking platform.

Where these figures come from
  • Nordic Safaris: Kukkola rapids: Two hours on the frozen river at the rapids: a guide shows you how to drill and bait, with a winter mat and a hot drink by the fire.
  • Nordic Safaris: Burbot nets: Two to three hours lifting the burbot nets set under the ice at the rapids, the way the river has been fished for generations, and fishing a hole.
  • Sea Lapland Safaris: Two hours by snowmobile onto the frozen Bothnian Bay, fishing with a guide, from the safari house in Kemi.

Ice fishing near Tornio is sold at one place: the Kukkola rapids, upstream on the river that forms the border.

Why the free rule is not the whole answer

Finland charges nothing for ice fishing with a single rod, and that is true in most of the country. The same table carries a footnote: the exemption does not apply in running and rapids sections of waters with migratory fish, or where a destination needs its own permit.1 The Tornio river is governed by a fishing rule shared between Finland and Sweden, which lists the ice-fishing rod among permitted gear and says nothing on whether using it is free.2 Kukkola is a rapids on that river. The tours do not say whether a permit or the fee is covered, so ask the company in writing before you pay, and do not fish the river on your own on the strength of the national rule.

What the guided outing gives you

Two hours on the ice with someone who knows the river: how to drill the hole, how to rig the line for perch, somewhere dry to sit and a fire to warm your hands.3 For a first try that is most of what you need, and it removes the question of where on a moving river the ice can be trusted.

If you would rather fish the sea

Kemi’s trips go out onto the Bothnian Bay or to a private pond, and are set out on ice fishing in Kemi. The rest of Tornio is on the Tornio destination page.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

What if we have to cancel?

The Tornio company refunds the whole booking if you cancel more than 48 hours before the start, and charges the whole amount inside that. That is stricter than the 24 hours the booking platforms usually give for the Kemi trips, so with a changeable forecast or plans that might move, the last free day to change your mind comes a day earlier than you may expect.

When in the winter does it run?

From 15 December to the end of March, with the company's own proviso that the December start depends on the weather. If your dates fall before the new year, ask when you book whether the outing is already running, and keep the date loose. Both outings print the same season, so the burbot nets are no more reliable early in the winter than the plain fishing is.

Which is best with young children?

Probably none of the Tornio pair. Neither page sets an age or a child price, and a rapids in midwinter is a cold place to sit still. The lodge in Keminmaa, about half an hour away, sells five hours at its own quiet pond, says the outing is designed for all ages with sledging and snowman-building between bites, and cooks salmon soup, at 120 euros a head.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
