Reindeer farm in Ruka: which visit to book

The short answer

For children who want to feed reindeer, the morning visit at the farm on the Kemijärvi road is the shortest and cheapest outing, but you drive there yourself and bring your own winter clothes. For a ride without leaving the resort, book the reindeer ride with stories at Lammintupa. The husky-and-reindeer park suits a family that wants both animals in one afternoon after New Year.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

No row is ranked: the four are different outings rather than one product at four prices, and the two farm visits leave the clothing and the drive to you.

Where these figures come from
  • Kujala: morning feeding: An hour at a working farm on the Kemijärvi road, feeding the herd; you arrive by your own transport in your own winter clothes.
  • Kujala: sleigh ride and feeding: The same farm with a sleigh ride added to the feeding, again in your own clothing.
  • Lammintupa: ride with stories: A reindeer ride in the winter village, with a snack and stories, meeting at the village café.
  • Rukapalvelu: husky and reindeer park: A husky ride and a reindeer ride at a winter adventure park, with transfers from the safari house, sold from January.

Around Ruka the reindeer are met in two quite different settings: at a working farm outside Kuusamo, and in the resort’s winter village.

The farm on the Kemijärvi road

Kujalan Porotila sells an hour of morning feeding at its farm, where the guide meets visitors at the gate of a parking area on Kemijärventie. The listing asks you to come in your own winter clothing and to bring under-eighteens with an adult, and it prints no pick-up.1 The same farm sells a longer visit with a sleigh ride added, on the same terms.

The ride in the resort

Lammintupa Winter Village sells a two-hour reindeer ride with a snack and stories, sold in winter and starting at the village café.2 Rukapalvelu combines a reindeer ride with a husky ride at a winter adventure park from January, with the transfer from its safari house counted in the length.3

A smaller farm, Erola’s Reindeer & Tree, lists fence encounters, forest walks with reindeer and a sleigh ride with a farm visit on its own site, without printing prices.4

Choosing

The morning feeding is the one to book for small children who mainly want to be close to the animals, as long as someone can drive. The ride at Lammintupa is the choice without a car. The adventure park costs the most of the four and puts two animals and a transfer into one outing.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

What happens if we have to cancel?

All four listings compared here are sold on GetYourGuide with the platform's free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, and a full refund inside that window. Later than that the booking is not refundable through the platform, so if the weather or a child's cold is likely to change your plans, book the day before rather than a week ahead.

Do we need a car to reach the Kujala farm?

Its listings give a meeting point at a large parking area by the road at Kemijärventie 133 in Kuusamo, where the guide meets you at the gate, and they print no pick-up. Plan on driving or taking a taxi from Ruka, and allow time to park and walk to the gate before the start, because the feeding does not wait for late arrivals.

Is the reindeer yoga at Kujala suitable for children?

Not for young ones. MyTrail Finland runs a yoga session among the reindeer at the Kujala farm, meeting in the farm's car park, and its listing marks it as not suitable for children under seven. For a family with small children the morning feeding at the same farm is the simpler choice, and it asks only that under-eighteens come with an adult.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
