The short answer

Without a car, book a trip from the village: Visit Inari's two hours through the forest or onto the lake collect you from your hotel, and Wilderness Hotel Inari runs its own from the hotel. With a car and a taste for fells, drive to Muotkan Ruoktu for a small group in the Muotkatunturi wilderness. For the guide to yourselves on Lake Inari, book the private day from Nellim.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Where these figures come from
  • Visit Inari: Two hours from the safari office in the village, through the forest or onto the frozen lake as the weather allows, daily at one.
  • Wilderness Hotel Inari: Two hours after a driving lesson, through the country near the hotel, two to a machine, with children under fifteen in the guide's sleigh.
  • Muotkan Ruoktu: Two or three hours off the beaten track in the Muotkatunturi wilderness from a lodge on Route 92, in a small group with a coffee break.
  • Inari Onnela, Nellim: Four hours on Lake Inari with a guide for your group alone, driving lessons first and snacks by a campfire.

Two snowmobile trips start in Inari village, sold by the village’s own safari sellers. The trips on the booking platforms start further out, at a fell lodge and on the shore of Lake Inari.

From the village

Visit Inari teaches the basics and then heads through the forest or out onto the frozen lake, as the weather allows, daily at one in the afternoon.1 It collects guests from hotels in the village. Wilderness Hotel Inari runs its own two hours after a driving lesson, through the country around the hotel.2

At Muotkan Ruoktu

Muotkan Ruoktu is a lodge on Route 92, the road towards Nordkapp, and you park at its reception. Both of its trips go off the beaten track into the Muotkatunturi wilderness in small groups, with safety training first, suits and helmets lent and a coffee break outside. The two-hour trip is the shorter taste; the three-hour one adds lakes and fells.

From Nellim

Inari Onnela runs a private four-hour trip for your group alone, starting in Nellim on Lake Inari. It lends winter clothing, gives driving lessons before setting off and stops for snacks by a campfire on the lake. A car transfer from Inari, Ivalo or Saariselkä can be added for an extra charge.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Can we book on the spot?

Visit Inari takes bookings at all its receptions as well as online, and opens winter dates in its online shop once it knows the snow and ice will carry the trips, so check closer to arrival. Muotkan Ruoktu's own site asks you to check availability through its contact form or by phone. The Nellim day is booked on the platform, with free cancellation up to a day before.

Is the speed the point?

Not at Muotkan Ruoktu. Its listings say the trips focus on nature and culture rather than speed, with stops to look at the landscape and a coffee break. The Nellim trip is paced by the private group, with driving lessons first; tell the guide at the start what you want from the day.

What if we damage the snowmobile?

Visit Inari makes every driver sign a form accepting personal liability of up to 900 euros for damage to the machine in an accident; its accident insurance covers medical costs. The Nellim day lists insurance among what the price includes. Wilderness Hotel Inari's page and Muotkan Ruoktu's listings in our record do not state a figure, so ask before you set off.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
