Private snowmobile tour in Muonio: is there one?

The short answer

Nobody in Muonio sells a snowmobile tour as private. If what you want is a machine to yourself, pay the single-driver price on Nivunki Village's rides, which is half as much again as sharing. If you want the guide and the route to yourselves, ask the village whether it will run a ride for your party alone; otherwise the nearest tour sold as private is in Sodankylä, a little over two hours away.

Muonio sells snowmobile rides three ways, and none of them is a private tour, however close the wording comes.

A machine to yourself

Nivunki Village prices every ride per person for two sharing a snowmobile, and prints a single-driver price beside it: 238.50 euros against 159 on the two-hour loop.1 That buys you the handlebars for the whole ride. It does not buy you the guide, the route or the group, which are the same as everyone else’s.

A group that might be only yours

The village’s terms set a minimum group of four persons unless a tour says otherwise.2 They say nothing about whether a party that fills a departure keeps it to itself, so a family of four who want exactly that should ask before booking and get the answer in writing.

A week alone on the machine

Harriniva’s snowmobile expedition gives everyone their own machine for five days on the fells between Muonio and Kilpisjärvi.3 You ride alone, but with the rest of the group.

The nearest private ride

Sodankylä, about two hours from Muonio, has a three-and-a-half-hour ride that its listing marks as a private group. For shared rides in Muonio itself, see snowmobile safari in Muonio.

Questions people ask

Is the big resort's snowmobile expedition private?

It is solitary rather than private. Harriniva's six-night expedition from Muonio to Kilpisjärvi and back gives each participant their own machine, with no shared driving and 100 to 140 kilometres a day, but it is sold per person as a group holiday, not as a tour for your party alone. It is also for adults with a licence, and the resort says it does not suit children.

Does a private tour cost much more than sharing?

In Sodankylä, the nearest listing marked private in this site's records prices a three-and-a-half-hour ride at 194 euros per person with two to a machine. That is thirty-five euros more than Nivunki Village's two-hour shared loop, for an hour and a half more on the snow, although the two rides differ in length and ground and are not the same product.

What if we have to cancel?

The two options behave alike on paper. Nivunki Village refunds the whole price more than 24 hours before the departure and charges the full amount after that, and the Sodankylä private ride's booking platform lists free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Harriniva's expedition is different: its terms take the whole amount at booking and keep it as a cancellation fee.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
