Northern lights tours in Levi for families

The short answer

Start from your youngest child. With a baby or toddler, choose a short evening that sets no lower age or starts at one. From three or four, the heated sleigh and the snowmobile evenings with a sledge for children open up. The snowshoe walk waits until twelve. Ask for a child fare, because the listings show one price per person.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest total for four. The family totals multiply the per-person price by four, because the listings show one price; Kotona's is one price for up to four. Only the totals are marked.

Where these figures come from
  • Kotona Lapland: private: One price for up to four, which makes it the only tour here whose family total does not grow with each child. From age one, two hours, with a photographer. The dearest option for a small family.
  • Safartica: campfire: No lower age, but the listing asks parents to weigh the late hour and about two hours outdoors. The cheapest evening for four, with winter clothing lent.
  • Lovimainas: heated sleigh: From age three, seated under a heated roof for three hours. The easiest evening for a child who feels the cold.
  • Safartica: snowmobile evening: From age four, children ride in a sledge behind the guide while two people share each snowmobile, with a campfire stop and winter clothing.

Most Levi aurora tours will take children, but not from the same age, and the listings print the rule in the small print. Starting from your youngest child’s age narrows the choice faster than anything else.

With a baby or toddler

Kotona Lapland’s private tour takes children from one, and it is the only one here priced as a whole: 750 euros for up to four people, for two hours with a photographer. Safartica’s campfire sets no lower age at all and costs 92 euros a person, 368 for four, but its listing asks parents to think about the late hour and the two hours outdoors. With a toddler, the private tour’s shorter evening and privacy are what the extra money buys.

From three or four

Lovimainas’ heated sleigh takes children from three and seats everyone under a plexiglass roof for three hours, at 99 euros a person, 396 for four. For a child who feels the cold, it is the evening to choose.

The snowmobile evenings open up too, with the child in a sledge or sleigh behind the guide rather than on the machine. Safartica’s evening takes children from four and costs 149 euros a person, 596 for four, with a campfire stop. Tokka Safaris’ takes them from three, with a child ticket for the sleigh, at 145 euros a person, 580 for four. Northern Lights Safaris’ snow village evening calls itself family-friendly and costs 119 euros a person, 476 for four, but its listing sets no age and lends no winter clothing.

From twelve

Lapland Safaris’ snowshoe walk sells child places from 12 to 14, starting at half past seven for two and a half hours. It suits older children who would rather walk than wait.

The all-night chase from Arctic GM sets no age, but at typically six to ten hours it is no evening for small children. Which of the evenings suits you on everything but age is compared in the northern lights in Levi, and the snowmobile evenings in more detail in the aurora snowmobile evenings in Levi. The rest of the resort is on the Levi destination page.

Questions people ask

How late do the evenings run?

Late enough to matter with small children. Lapland Safaris' snowshoe walk starts at half past seven and lasts two and a half hours. Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park asks you to note the late timing of its aurora ride, and Safartica asks parents to weigh the late hour before bringing small children to its campfire. The other listings give no start time, so ask when you book and plan the next morning around it.

Can a child sit on the snowmobile with a parent?

Not on the evenings that say where children go. Safartica seats children from four to 14 in a sledge behind the guide's snowmobile, Tokka sells a child ticket for a place in a sleigh, and Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park tucks children under blankets on a sledge. Lovimainas shares each snowmobile between two participants and sells seats in a separate heated sleigh. The driver must be 18 on the listings that say so.

What if the children get cold before the aurora appears?

Choose an evening with somewhere warm built in. Lovimainas' heated sleigh keeps everyone under a roof, Northern Lights Safaris' evening includes a snow village visit, and Lovimainas' snowmobile trip stops at a kota shelter. On the campfire evening you stand outdoors for about two hours, with winter clothing lent. Whatever you book, bring an extra layer for each child.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
