Northern lights with children in Pyhä-Luosto: bedtime and cloud

The short answer

With a toddler, book the early talk and short walk in Luosto: it takes all ages and is among the shortest evenings here. With children who can walk a couple of hours in snow, the evening snowshoe walk from the Luosto slopes is a real outing whatever the sky does. Save the hunt by car for older children who can stay up late, because it is the longest evening here.

Nothing is marked, because the right evening depends on the youngest child. The Monday talk in Luosto runs only from 29 December onwards.

Where these figures come from
  • Monday talk in Luosto: A show about the aurora and a short walk to a viewpoint with drinks by a campfire, for all ages.
  • Aurora talk: Stories and sky-watching over hot drinks, with the talk going ahead on cloudy nights.
  • Snowshoe walk: Two hours on snowshoes into the forest from the Luosto slopes, in any weather.
  • Hunt by car: The longest evening, driving to the clearest sky within reach and waiting there by a fire.

For a family, when an aurora evening ends matters as much as where it goes.

Early and short

Lapland Safaris’ talk in Luosto starts on Monday evenings, takes children of every age and ends two hours later, after a walk to a viewpoint and drinks by a fire.1 Kairankutsu’s talk runs for the same two hours and suits a grandparent who cannot walk far.2

For children who can walk

Kairankutsu’s snowshoe walk leaves from the Luosto slopes for two hours in the forest and takes children from eight.3

Late

Its hunt by car can leave as late as twenty-five past nine and, at three and a half hours, returns close to one in the morning.4

What these evenings cost a family is worked out on northern lights tour prices in Pyhä-Luosto.

Questions people ask

Can a baby come?

On the Monday talk in Luosto, yes: it is sold for all ages and has its own category for children up to three. The hunt by car also lists infants, so ask the operator how a baby seat is arranged in its vehicle. The snowshoe walk takes no one under eight.

Is warm clothing lent for the children?

On the Luosto talk, thermal overalls are available if needed. The operator's three evenings do not include warm clothes and shoes; for its aurora talk it asks for rental clothing to be reserved in advance and collected from its office in Pyhätunturi, so ask the same for the other two.

What if a child is ill on the day?

The Luosto talk can be cancelled for a 25-euro fee eight days or more ahead and costs the full price from seven days before. The other three charge the full price for a cancellation or no-show within seven days. Neither makes an exception for illness, so travel insurance is what covers it.

Lapland Handbook Staff

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
