Family snowmobile safari in Ylitornio: where the children ride

The short answer

With a four-year-old, only Aavasaksa Adventures' half-day ride and the Tornio sledge rides will take them. From five, the three-hour valley ride from Aavasaksa seats children in a sleigh behind the guide. From twelve, children may ride on the snowmobile itself on that ride and join Aavasaksa Adventures' evening ride. Dress them yourselves for the valley ride; Tornio lends overalls and boots.

Which snowmobile ride suits a family near Ylitornio depends almost entirely on the age of the youngest child.

From five: the sleigh behind the guide

The three-hour ride from Aavasaksa to the valley shelter takes children from five. Those aged five to eleven travel in a sleigh towed by the guide’s snowmobile, and from twelve a child may choose between the sleigh and a seat on the snowmobile.1

From four: Aavasaksa Adventures or Tornio

Aavasaksa Adventures lists its half-day ride for ages four and up, and keeps its evening ride for twelve and over.2 The Tornio company, 49 minutes away, seats children aged four to fourteen in a sledge.3

Dressing them

On the valley ride you bring the winter clothing, for children as for adults, and the company lends helmets, hoods and gloves; Aavasaksa Adventures does not say what it lends. In Tornio overalls and boots are lent, which is worth the drive if the children have nothing warm enough. The rides themselves are compared on snowmobile safari in Ylitornio.

Questions people ask

What happens on a very cold day with children aboard?

The Tornio company says that at minus twenty or colder, with children on the safari, it reserves the right to shorten the programme. The Aavasaksa listings print no temperature rule, so ask them the same question when booking, and be ready to move the date: a child sitting still in a sleigh gets cold far sooner than the adult driving.

Can a child come on the six-hour ride into Sweden?

The six-hour listing gives no rule for children at all, unlike the three-hour one from the same company, which sets five as the youngest. With a long day, a soup lunch outdoors and a border crossing, ask KJ-Experience directly before assuming the three-hour rules carry over, and carry an identity document for each child.

How much does a child cost?

Only the Tornio company prints a figure: 75 euros for a child aged four to fourteen in the sledge, against 175 for each adult sharing a snowmobile. KJ-Experience sells only one-person and two-person snowmobile tickets on its shop pages, and Aavasaksa Adventures shows prices only after a date is picked, so ask both what a child in the sleigh costs.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
