Reindeer with children in Muonio: what each age can do

The short answer

With children aged four to eleven, the Torassieppi farm visit has its own child ticket; dress them yourself, because part of it is outdoors and no winter clothing is included. For a sleigh ride too, book one of the local winter packages, which include a short one and lend winter clothing to everyone. In Levi, check the age line before booking: one farm day takes nobody under thirteen, and one ride counts fourteen-year-olds as adults.

Two reindeer outings are sold in Muonio, and they suit children in different ways.

The farm visit you can book on its own

Torassieppi’s two-hour visit sells two tickets, one for twelve and over and one for children from four to eleven, and calls itself an experience for all ages. Part of it happens outdoors among the old buildings and in the farm yard, and the listing asks you to dress for the weather; winter clothing is not among what it includes.1

The visit inside a package

The local winter packages include a reindeer visit at the same farm with a museum, a go with the lasso and a short sleigh ride under warm blankets, and they lend winter clothing to every guest for the whole stay.2 The packages built for smaller children suit a young family; the aurora-focused ones are designed for children of twelve and up.

Rides in Levi

Levi, 46 minutes away, sells sleigh rides with their lengths printed, and two of its reindeer listings draw an age line: one ride counts anyone from fourteen as an adult,3 and a four-hour farm day takes nobody under thirteen. The rides are compared on reindeer farm in Levi.

Questions people ask

Is there a family ticket for the reindeer farm?

Not in the operator's online shop. It sells a family ticket for its husky farm visit, for two adults and one or two children, but the reindeer farm visit is sold only by adult and child ticket. If you are planning both animals in one day at Torassieppi, the husky family ticket is the one saving the shop offers, and the reindeer visit is priced per head on top.

Where do children sit on the package sleigh ride?

The package pages describe it only as a short reindeer sleigh ride with warm blankets, after the museum and the lasso, and do not say how many sit in each sleigh or whether a child rides with a parent. The same packages are careful to say that on the snowmobile trip children ride in a sleigh behind the guide, so ask the operator for the equivalent detail on the reindeer ride.

Is the reindeer walk in Ylläs good for children?

It can be, with a parent beside them: two guests share one reindeer, the group is eight at most, and the walk is about a kilometre through the forest before pancakes by a fire at a glass igloo. The listing prints no age limit, and the trail is a forest path in snow, so ask about pushchairs and the youngest children before booking. Ylläs is 46 minutes from Muonio.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
