The short answer

Decide first whether you want the snowmobile ride, because it roughly doubles the price. If you only want to fish, a trip by road does the same fishing for far less, and the cheapest is the lowest price per hour here. If you want the ride too, the five-hour safari with a lunch spreads its higher price over the most time. Check what clothing is lent, because the cheap trips ask you to bring your own.

  • Wonderlapland: by road: The cheapest trip and the lowest price per hour: transport, gear, a guide and a hot drink. You bring your own warm and thermal clothing.
  • Keo Wilderness: by road: Nine euros more buys a heated shelter, salmon soup and a fire to cook the catch, with thermal suits on request. The shortest trip, at two and a half hours.
  • Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park: by snowmobile: The cheapest of the snowmobile trips, with overalls, boots and gloves lent. Two adults share a machine; driving alone is a supplement.
  • Safartica: by snowmobile, with lunch: Five hours with a soup lunch outdoors and winter clothing, which makes its hour cheaper than the three-hour snowmobile trips. Driving alone adds 90 euros.

The ice fishing trips sold in Levi fall into two groups. The ones that drive you to the lake cost 80 to 113 euros a person. The ones that take you there by snowmobile cost 189 to 245. Once on the ice, the fishing is described in much the same terms: gear, a guide and something hot to drink.

What the snowmobile costs

Set the cheapest trip of each kind side by side and the ride adds 109 euros a person: Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park’s snowmobile trip at 189 against Wonderlapland’s by road at 80. At the top of each group the gap is 132 euros. For a family of four that is more than 400 euros for the ride alone. If driving a snowmobile is part of what you want from the day, it is worth it; if you want to fish, it is the most expensive part of the ticket.

What an hour costs

Divided by the listed length, Wonderlapland’s trip is the cheapest hour at 26.67 euros a person. Keo Wilderness’ shorter trip costs 35.60 an hour and adds a heated shelter and salmon soup. Among the snowmobile trips, Safartica’s five-hour safari with a soup lunch spreads its price furthest, at 41.80 an hour against 63 for Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park’s three hours.

What the ticket leaves out

Clothing, on the cheap trips. Wonderlapland asks you to bring warm and thermal clothing, and Keo lends thermal suits only on request. Both snowmobile trips in the table lend winter clothing. If you would have to hire a set, add it to the road trips before comparing them with the snowmobile ones.

Questions people ask

Is a fishing licence included?

On one listing it says so. Kinos includes the fishing equipment and the licence on its snowmobile safari. The other listings include the fishing gear and a guide but, as we recorded them, say nothing about a licence. Ask the operator whether the trip covers it before you go, particularly if you plan to fish again on your own later in the stay.

What does driving a snowmobile alone add?

On the snowmobile trips two adults share a machine unless you pay extra. Safartica sells a single-driving supplement of 90 euros a person on its five-hour safari, taking it from 209 to 299 euros. Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park offers single driving as a supplement on its trip without printing the amount, and Kinos has a single-rider machine from the age of 18.

Can we cook what we catch?

On Keo Wilderness' trip, yes: its listing includes an outdoor fireplace to cook your fish, next to a heated shelter and a pot of salmon soup. The other listings do not mention cooking the catch. If that is part of what you want from the day, it is a reason to choose Keo over a cheaper trip.
