The short answer

For the most trail with the least fuss, book the ten-kilometre run from the kennel near Ylläsjärvi if you are staying there, or the farm near Äkäslompolo if you are staying on that side of the fell. Adults who want a longer run should take the sixteen kilometres. For a party of up to four who want the dogs and the trail to themselves, the private half day on the small farm is the one to book.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: lowest adult price. The longer runs are not marked as better. The private half day is priced per person, so for a party of four it costs four times the figure shown.

Where these figures come from
  • Kennel, 10 km: About two hours with ten kilometres on the trail, two to a team and taking turns to steer.
  • Farm, 9 km: Two and a half hours at a farm of over a hundred dogs, collected in Äkäslompolo.
  • Kennel, 16 km: Sixteen kilometres for riders of thirteen and over, running from early January.
  • Private farm, 15 km: About fifteen kilometres with a pack of ten dogs, for one party of up to four.

The husky tours from Ylläs are sold by two companies on either side of the fell and one small farm to the south.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Can we come to the kennel in our own car?

At the farm near Äkäslompolo, no: its operator says the farms can only be visited as part of an organised group, and collects guests in the village. The kennel runs near Ylläsjärvi start from three pick-up points there. The private half day leaves transfers to you, so ask the farm how to reach it by car.

Does the tour still run in hard frost?

The farm near Äkäslompolo reserves the right to change the route for safety, and the private farm says the length of the tour may be adjusted in extreme cold, heat or soft snow to protect people and dogs. None of them lists a temperature at which a tour is cancelled, so ask what happens to your booking if it is.

Can someone with a bad back come?

The farm near Äkäslompolo says its husky safaris are not suitable for people with back, hip, leg or wrist problems, or for pregnant women, because of the vibration on uneven tracks. The other three do not say either way, so raise it with them before you book rather than after.
