Santa Claus in Kilpisjärvi: what exists and how far the rest is

The short answer

Write to the reindeer farm in the village first. It is the only place in Kilpisjärvi this site found that offers Santa at all, the visit is private, and the farm is within walking distance of the hotels, so a family avoids a long drive in the dark. If it cannot fit you in, the nearest visits sold with a price are in Levi, more than three hours away, and Rovaniemi's free office is over five.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Price Not stated €150 per person Free
Drive from Kilpisjärvi Walking distance 194 min 313 min

How to book Enquiry by email Online No booking

The farm publishes no price, so the price row is not ranked. Driving times are Google Maps figures between the village centres.

Where these figures come from
  • Kilpis Reindeer (village): A private Santa visit at a Sámi family's reindeer farm in the middle of the village, arranged by enquiry only.
  • Arctic Shaman (Levi): Two and a half hours with a sleigh ride and a private family meeting of about half an hour, one family at a time.
  • Santa Claus Office (Rovaniemi): Santa's office in the Santa Claus Village, free to walk into and open all year, with no booking.

The village’s safari company sells snowmobiles, aurora evenings, snowshoes, ice fishing and reindeer, and its winter list includes no Santa.1

The one local possibility

A Sámi family runs a reindeer farm in the middle of the village, a walk from the hotels, and offers a private Santa visit as part of its winter programme. It is arranged by enquiry only and cannot be booked online, and the farm publishes no price or length for it.2 That makes it the first thing to ask about, not the last.

If the answer is no

Everything else is a long drive. Muonio is two hours and 25 minutes away, but its only Santa meeting comes inside a Christmas package. Levi, three and a quarter hours away, sells private family meetings and an elf park by the person. Rovaniemi’s office costs nothing to enter and is more than five hours away by road.

The visits in Levi are compared on Santa Claus in Levi, and the reindeer visits in the village on best reindeer tour in Kilpisjärvi.

Questions people ask

What should we put in the enquiry to the farm?

The farm's own advice for any visit is to send your preferred date, the size of the group and the ages of the children, so it can suggest what suits you and explain its current child pricing. For a Santa visit add how long you are staying, because a family with one fixed evening is harder to fit in than one with a few days to choose from.

Can we combine Santa with meeting the reindeer?

The farm sells its reindeer visits separately, from an hour with a wooden sleigh ride round the farm to two hours of feeding and stories in its Kammi, a traditional Sámi hut, and it presents the Santa visit as part of the same winter programme. It does not say whether the two are sold together, so ask in the same message; that way you only arrange one trip across the village.

We arrive through Rovaniemi. Is that the easier place to meet Santa?

It can be. The reindeer farm itself points out that Rovaniemi is reached by train or plane and that a direct coach runs on to Kilpisjärvi. Santa's office in Rovaniemi is free to walk into and open all year, so a family already passing through can meet him there on the way in or out and keep the days in Kilpisjärvi for the fells.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
