Snowmobile safari prices in Salla

The short answer

Riding alone in Salla costs about a third more than sharing, not twice as much, because Sallatunturin Tuvat prices the sledge rather than the seat. On the two-hour trip to Ruuhitunturi a solo rider pays 139 euros against 110 each for a pair, and on the Arctic Circle day 249 against 189. If the premium matters more than the privacy, the short trips carry the smallest one, and the difference grows with every extra hour on the trail.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Ruuhitunturi, 2 hLapp hut, 3 hNational park, 5 hArctic Circle, 5–6 h
Each, two per sledge €110 – the lowest price when two share €135 €179 €189
The sledge, two riders €220 €270 €358 €378
One per sledge €139 – the lowest price for riding alone €175 €235 €249
What riding alone adds €29 – the smallest premium for riding alone €40 €56 €60
Solo rider's share of the sledge 63% 65% 66% 66%
Duration 2 h 3 h 5 h 5–6 h

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest price when two share, the lowest price for riding alone and the smallest premium for riding alone. Both prices come from the operator's own page for each safari, which lists a sledge with one rider and a sledge with two. The premium row is the solo price minus the per-person price of the shared sledge.

Where these figures come from
  • Ruuhitunturi, 2 h: The short trip from the resort to the fell, with coffee and a bun. The smallest premium for a machine to yourself, and the cheapest sledge.
  • Lapp hut, 3 h: Forest trails at an easy pace, described for beginners and families. An hour longer than the fell trip for 25 euros more a head.
  • National park, 5 h: About sixty kilometres with a picnic lunch, close to the eastern border. Riding it alone costs nearly twice the premium of the short trips.
  • Arctic Circle, 5–6 h: South to the Arctic Circle sign by Lake Hautajärvi and soup at the café there. The dearest sledge and the dearest solo seat.

Most snowmobile listings in Lapland quote a seat and leave you to guess what a machine to yourself would cost. Salla’s resort operator prints both figures.

Two prices on every safari

Sallatunturin Tuvat gives each of its safaris a price for one person per sledge and a price for two. The two-hour trip to Ruuhitunturi is 139 euros alone or 220 for the sledge, which is 110 each. The Arctic Circle day is 249 alone or 378 for the sledge, 189 each. In between sit the three-hour run to the Lapp hut at 175 and 270, and the five-hour national park trip at 235 and 358.

What the premium really is

Subtract one from the other and riding alone costs 29 euros on the short fell trip, 40 on the Lapp hut run, 56 in the national park and 60 on the Arctic Circle day. Read the other way, a solo rider pays between 63 and 66 per cent of the whole sledge, and the share barely moves while the trip triples in length. So the premium is not a fixed surcharge but a roughly constant fraction, and the longer you are out, the more euros that fraction comes to.

The other company in the village

Kola Extreme Safaris starts from the centre of Salla rather than the resort and sells its own three-hour trip to Ruuhitunturi from 240 euros, with driving gear fitted at the base and lunch on the way. Its listing gives that one figure without saying whether it covers a rider or a sledge, so it cannot be set against the numbers above; ask before you compare it with the resort’s 110 euros for the same fell.

Where each route goes and how hard it is to ride is on snowmobile safari in Salla, and the rest of the winter programme on the Salla destination page.

Questions people ask

Why is one rider not half the price of two?

Because the figure on the listing belongs to the sledge, not to the seat: the same page gives 220 euros for a sledge with two people on it and 139 for a sledge with one. The operator does not explain the arithmetic anywhere we could find, so all we can report is the pattern, which holds across every safari it sells: one rider pays roughly two thirds of what a pair pays for the same machine.

Is winter clothing included?

The safaris page says all its safaris include driving lessons and equipment, a guide, and the snowmobile and fuel, and it adds that you can start your snowmobile safari in everyday clothes. That is a site-wide statement rather than a promise on each trip's own page, so it is worth confirming when you book, particularly for children travelling with you.

What happens if the snowmobile is damaged?

Every Sallatunturin Tuvat safari we read names an excess of 890 euros per snowmobile in the event of an accident or damage, and the figure does not change with the length or price of the trip. The other company selling snowmobile trips in Salla, Kola Extreme Safaris in the village centre, names a deductible of 1,000 euros on its own three-hour trip to Ruuhitunturi.

Lapland Handbook Staff

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
