Northern lights tour price in Salla: what each evening costs a family

The short answer

The bus hunt is the cheapest evening in Salla for a family and also the longest, with warm clothing lent and pickup included. The sleigh ride and the snowshoe walk cost only a little more. The reindeer ride costs about a third more than the others, which buys the reindeer rather than more time under the sky.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Hunt by busSleigh rideSnowshoe walkReindeer ride
Adult €85 – the lowest adult fare €89 €92 €116
Child €42.50 – the lowest child fare €46 €46 €58
Two adults, two children €255 – the lowest family total €270 €276 €348
Length 3–4 h 2 h 3 h 3 h

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest adult fare, the lowest child fare and the lowest family total. The family total assumes two children aged three to eleven, the ages all four evenings price. Child fares at the wilderness park are half the adult fare. The moonlight snowmobile safari is left out because it prints no child fare.

Where these figures come from
  • Hunt by bus: Three to four hours with pickup, hot drinks and warm clothing lent, sold from September.
  • Sleigh ride: Two hours seated in a sleigh behind a snowmobile, with a hot drink and sausages at a hut.
  • Snowshoe walk: Three hours on snowshoes through the forest at night, with clothing lent and a group of at most sixteen.
  • Reindeer ride: Three hours behind reindeer through forest and swamp to a fire, with clothing lent.

Every aurora evening in Salla prints a price per adult and per child, so a family’s evening can be added up in advance.

Questions people ask

What about the moonlight snowmobile safari?

The resort's moonlight safari is an hour and a half of driving a snowmobile after dark, at 110 euros each with two to a machine or 139 riding alone, and the aurora may appear on the way. It prints no child fare, so it cannot be priced for a family and is left out of the table.

Do we get money back if the sky is cloudy?

The wilderness park says its bus tour may be cancelled in cloudy weather and then refunds in full. Neither the resort's sleigh ride nor the park's other evenings mention a weather refund, because they go ahead as outings in their own right. Ask what happens before you pay.

Is anything extra to pay on the night?

Not on the pages. The park's price covers the guide, transport or the reindeer, hot drinks and the lent overalls and boots; the resort's covers the sleigh, a hot drink and sausages at the hut. Photographs are yours to take, and none of the pages mentions an official picture for sale.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
