Husky and snowmobile tour in Ruka: one trip or two

Two dog sled teams running along a snowy trail through a sunlit forest

The short answer

For the lowest price, book the snowmobile ride out to a husky farm, where the sled ride is short and children under 135 cm travel in a heated sled. To drive the dogs yourself, book the winter village's combination, which also costs a little less than its husky ride and snowmobile safari booked separately. Book the two apart only to spread them over two days.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Where these figures come from
  • Kuusamo Safaris: combination: About 20 km by snowmobile to a husky farm, a 2.5 km sled ride, coffee and a bun.
  • Lammintupa: combination: About an hour and a half on the snowmobile and five kilometres driving the dogs yourself.
  • Lammintupa: two trips: The same village's five-kilometre husky ride and two-hour snowmobile safari, booked apart.

Around Ruka a husky ride and a snowmobile can be had in one morning, and the two combinations on sale are built quite differently.

To the husky farm by snowmobile

Kuusamo Safaris rides about 20 km by snowmobile to a husky farm, where the dogs pull you for about 2.5 km before coffee and a bun. It is the cheaper combination, and children under 135 cm travel in a heated sled.1

Driving the dogs yourself

The winter village at Lammintupa spends about an hour and a half on the snowmobile and gives you five kilometres at the handlebar of your own dog team.2

Or as two trips

Booked apart, the village’s husky ride and two-hour snowmobile safari cost €10 more each for two sharing than its combination, for about the same time on the dogs and the machine.3 Two separate trips let you put a rest day between them.

The husky rides alone are compared on husky tours in Ruka, and the snowmobile safaris on the best snowmobile tour in Ruka.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Who drives the dogs?

At the winter village, you do: the five-kilometre husky ride is self-driven, one person driving and one sitting, and you change places halfway. Kuusamo Safaris' listing describes a dog sled ride of about 2.5 km at the farm without saying who stands on the runners, so ask when booking if driving the team is the reason you are going.

What if not enough people book?

Both combinations need four people in total. Kuusamo Safaris says your own booking need not reach four, and Lammintupa prints a minimum of four with a refund if it cancels. Book early in a quiet week, and ask when you will hear whether the trip is running.

How late can we cancel?

Lammintupa keeps the whole price inside two days and half inside a week. Kuusamo Safaris keeps the whole price inside six days and 5% inside thirty. If your dates may still move, the winter village's terms leave more room, since you can still cancel a week out and get half the price back.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
