The short answer

Price a Santa visit for the whole family and by what fills the time. The one-hour cabin visit costs the most per hour by far, because most of what you pay for is the ride and the privacy. The private hut visit and the elf park cost 600 to 700 euros for four and last longer. The snowshoe trip is cheapest for four but takes no child under ten.

How the operators compare

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest price per person and the lowest total for four. All four price per person, including the private visits, and show one price, so the family total multiplies it by four. Prices are the starting prices on the day we read the listings.

Where these figures come from
  • Arctic Shaman: private hut: Priced per person although only one family goes at a time. The one listing that says how long you spend with Santa: about 30 minutes, with a sleigh ride round a lake and reindeer to feed.
  • Arcandia: Elf Court: A three-hour park with an elf as guide, Santa among many other things. Close to the private hut in total for four, and the cheapest hour of the three that set no lower age.
  • Polar Lights: cabin visit: One private hour with a sled or sleigh ride and transfers from the centre. The dearest ticket and by far the dearest hour, because the visit is short.
  • Alex Tar: snowshoe trip: Four hours on snowshoes to a cabin, four people at most. The lowest total for four, but nobody under ten or over sixty can come.

Levi’s private aurora tours are sold for the whole group. The four Santa programmes listed here are not: even the two that keep your family apart from others charge for each person, so the total rises with every child. That makes the family total, not the ticket, the figure to compare.

What four people pay

At the listed prices a family of four pays 556 euros for Alex Tar’s snowshoe trip, 600 for Arctic Shaman Adventures’ private hut visit, 696 for Arcandia’s Elf Court and 804 for Polar Lights Tours’ cabin visit. The cheapest total is out of reach for most families with young children: the snowshoe trip takes nobody under ten. Among the other three, the private hut is the cheapest.

What an hour costs

Spread over its length, the snowshoe trip costs 34.75 euros a person an hour, the Elf Court 58 and the private hut 60. Polar Lights’ visit lasts one hour, so its hour costs 201 euros. What you buy there is a private ride out to a hidden cabin and back, with transfers from the centre, rather than time.

What the meeting itself costs

Only Arctic Shaman’s listing says how long you spend with Santa: about 30 minutes, in a Lappish hut, with the children greeted by name. That puts the meeting at 5 euros a minute for each person, 20 euros a minute for a family of four. The other listings do not say how much of the programme is the meeting, so ask before booking if that is what the children are going for.

Which programme suits which children, whatever it costs, is argued on Santa Claus in Levi. Families weighing Levi against Rovaniemi will find the Santa visits there in meeting Santa Claus in Rovaniemi, and the rest of the resort is on the Levi destination page.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Do we have to bring presents for Santa to give?

On Arctic Shaman Adventures' private visit, yes: its listing says the gifts Santa hands out must be brought by you or arranged in advance, and Santa greets the children by the names and ages you give at booking. Neither cost is in the table, so if you want a present from Santa, add it to the price. The other listings do not say how gifts are handled, so ask.

Is transport from our hotel included?

On one of the four as we recorded them. Polar Lights Tours includes transfers from Levi centre in its hour. Arctic Shaman's listing, as we recorded it, does not mention pick-up, and Arcandia's and Alex Tar's do not make transport clear, so ask before booking if you have no car, and add a taxi to the total if it is not included.

Are the prices the same all season?

The listings show a starting price, and what you pay on your date appears only when you choose one. Check the price for your actual date rather than relying on the figure here, which is the starting price shown on the day we read it. For a family, any rise counts four times over in the total.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
