Northern lights tour price in Kemijärvi: what a family actually pays

The short answer

For two adults and two children aged four to fourteen, the resort's kota or heated-sleigh evening is the cheapest published family total, because children under fifteen pay half. The snowmobile evening costs more, and the hunt by car and the campfire evening print no child fare, so their family total cannot be worked out from the listings. Book on the platform if you want a published refund window; the resort's own shop prints none.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest published family total and the lowest total for two adults. Totals multiply the published fares only. The family total reads Not stated where no child fare is printed, rather than assuming children pay the adult price.

Where these figures come from
  • Jauri Resort: kota or sleigh: Two and a half hours with thermal clothing and a hot drink; child fares and the four-adult minimum printed in the resort's own shop.
  • Jauri Resort: snowmobile: Two and a half hours driving, two adults to a machine, children in a towed sledge at their own fare.
  • Rovaniemi Insider: hunt by car: Six hours by people carrier with photographs, snacks and winter clothing in the price, sold per person on the platform.
  • Lappi Creative: campfire: About two and a half hours by a fire with a hot drink and snacks, one price per person and at most four per booking.

The headline fare is the smaller part of the question for a family. What matters is whether a child fare exists at all, and that is printed in one place only.

Where the child fares are

The resort’s own shop charges half the adult fare for children under fifteen on its kota and heated-sleigh evenings, and nothing for children of three and under.1 The same kota evening on the booking platform shows the adult price and no child fare. The hunt by car and the small campfire evening print one price per person and nothing for children, so their family total is a question to ask, not a sum to do.

What the price buys

Every evening includes a guide and something hot to drink. The resort’s evenings and the hunt by car lend clothing; only the hunt includes photographs, which goes some way to explaining why it costs more for six hours than the resort does for two and a half.

Refunds

The platform gives free cancellation up to 24 hours before the kota evening and the hunt. The resort’s own terms have a heading for cancellation and no terms beneath it,2 and the campfire company prints none, so agree them in writing if you book either directly.

Questions people ask

Is the snowmobile evening dearer if I drive alone?

Yes. The resort charges 153 euros per adult when two share a snowmobile and 205 euros for an adult driving alone, so a couple who want a machine each pay 104 euros more between them than a couple who share. The page also says the machine is insured with a self-liability of 1,200 euros, which is what a driver could be asked to pay after damage.

Do we get money back if the sky stays cloudy?

Not on any of these terms. Every page says the aurora cannot be guaranteed, and none promises a refund for an evening that runs under cloud. The hunt by car's listing refunds in full for force majeure, but does not say that cloud counts, so treat the fare as paying for the evening and the attempt rather than for a sighting.

Does the heated sleigh cost more than the kota evening?

No: both are 115 euros per adult, with the same child fares and the same four-adult minimum. The difference is the evening itself. The kota evening goes by minibus to a hut with a fire and a hot drink; the sleigh evening keeps you seated in a heated sledge behind a snowmobile and adds a small snack. Choose by which your party would rather sit in for two and a half hours.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
