Best husky tour in Kemi: one pick for each kind of visitor

The short answer

With small children or on a first ride, book the farm's shortest programme, which keeps the sled time brief and the time with the dogs long. If you want to drive for as long as possible, book its hour on the sled, run from mid-January. If you have no car and no winter clothing, book the ride from the Kemi safari house, which lends the outfit and drives you to the kennel.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Nothing is ranked: a longer run is not a better one for a four-year-old. The farm prints its rides by minutes on the sled and the Kemi ride by distance, so the two are not converted into each other.

Where these figures come from
  • Kemi safari house, 5 km: A run you steer yourselves, two to a sled, after changing into a lent winter outfit in town and a short car ride to the kennel.
  • Keminmaa farm, 15 min: The farm's own pick for families with younger children and anyone who would rather not stay out long: a short run, then time with the dogs by the fire.
  • Keminmaa farm, 30 min: The middle programme, rated medium difficulty by the farm: twice the sled time of the short ride inside a two-hour visit.
  • Keminmaa farm, 60 min: An hour on the sled, which the farm recommends for fitter people and runs only from mid-January, when the snow allows.

Around Kemi the choice is less about which kennel than about how long you want on the runners. The farm in Keminmaa sells its rides by minutes on the sled, and the Kemi company sells a set distance.

For small children or a first try

The farm’s shortest programme puts you on the sled for fifteen minutes inside an hour and a half, then leaves time with the dogs, a snack and a fire. The farm itself names it the one for families with younger children and for anyone who would rather not stay out long.1 Its two-hour programme doubles the sled time for families whose children already know they like it.

For the longest drive

The farm’s hour on the sled is the most driving sold around Kemi. It is recommended for fitter guests and starts only in mid-January, when there is enough snow for a longer trail.2 Anyone visiting before then should plan on the shorter programmes.

For no car and no winter gear

The ride from the Kemi safari house lends the full outfit, down to wool socks and gloves, and drives you to the kennel for five kilometres that two of you steer in turns.3 The farm rents boots and overalls on site, but you still have to reach it.

What each of these costs, and what a family of four pays, is on husky safari prices in Kemi. The two kennels are introduced on husky safari in Kemi.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Can we book the farm's rides online?

Not on its own website. The farm asks for bookings by text message to 046 579 5155 or by e-mail, and its pages end with a request to e-mail for enquiries. Only its private safari appears on a booking platform. Allow time for a reply, and say which programme you want, since the three rides share one kennel and one set of guides.

Is there a weight limit on the sled?

At the Keminmaa farm, yes: 180 kilograms combined when two share a sled, and 140 kilograms for one person driving alone. Its terms also let the guides seat anyone they judge unfit to drive in the sled as a passenger instead. The Kemi company's listing asks only that the driver is at least 18 and fit enough to handle a sled.

Which days does the Kemi company's kennel trip run?

It depends on who you ask. The company's own website lists it from Wednesday to Sunday at 8.45 and 14.45. A travel agency in Kemi that sells the same trip with hotel pickup lists Monday to Friday, with other days on request. Check the day you want with whoever you book through before planning around it.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
