Ice fishing in Salla
Illustration photo: a frozen pond in the woods, not in Salla.
The short answer
Book it as a gentle half day on the snow rather than a serious fishing trip: a guided snowmobile ride to a wilderness pond, fishing, and a picnic lunch with coffee. Sharing a machine is the cheaper way at 141 euros each; riding alone costs 184, and children aged 3 to 11 pay 92. You can come in everyday clothes, as the gear is provided.
Salla has one ice fishing trip on sale, run by Sallatunturin Tuvat from the Sallatunturi fell resort.
What happens
A guide leads a snowmobile ride to a remote pond in the wilderness. There you try ice fishing, then eat a picnic lunch with coffee. The whole trip takes three to four hours, and the company describes it as ideal for beginners and families.
What it costs
Two adults sharing a snowmobile pay 141 euros each; one adult riding alone pays 184. Children aged 3 to 11 pay 92. The company provides the snowmobiling gear and teaches the basics before setting off, so you can arrive in everyday clothes.
How an afternoon on the ice goes, and what the kit lists mean, is in ice fishing in Lapland. The rest of Salla is on the Salla destination page.
What a machine to yourself costs here, and why the solo rate is never double the shared one, is worked out in snowmobile safari prices in Salla.

Questions people ask
Do children drive the snowmobile?
No. Children aged 3 to 11 have their own price on the listing and ride with an adult, who drives. Two adults can share one machine. The company teaches the basics of snowmobiling before setting off, so no experience is needed for the driver.
What happens if the machine is damaged?
The listing names an excess of 890 euros per snowmobile in case of an accident, the same as on the company's other safaris. Two people sharing a machine share that risk. Ask whether it can be reduced, and check what your travel insurance covers.
Is there ice fishing without the snowmobile?
Not among the trips listed for Salla. If you would rather not drive, the Inari ice fishing guide describes a two-hour trip elsewhere in Lapland where you sit in a sledge behind the guide's snowmobile, and the Kemi guide compares trips on the sea ice.
