Private ice fishing near Posio: what comes closest

A snow-covered wooden jetty on a frozen lake, with frost-covered forest along the shore

The short answer

For ice fishing with nobody else, the only product that promises it is a tailored private day from a Kemijärvi company for one to four people, with ice fishing as one part among several. The same company's evening trip is capped at four per booking but joins a small group. A party of four to eight adults can fill the professional fisherman's day by themselves, and a Posio lake on your own costs nothing in licences.

There is no private ice fishing on sale in Posio. What exists nearby comes in three shapes, and only one of them is private in writing.

The one private product

A Kemijärvi company sells a tailored private day for one to four people at 1,290 euros. Ice fishing with a chance of the aurora is one element, alongside snowshoeing, a reindeer farm and lunch by the fire.1 It is a day built around you rather than a fishing trip, it covers Kemijärvi, Pyhä, Luosto and Rovaniemi, and it does not state how long it lasts.

The small evening that is not private

The same company’s evening on the ice takes at most four people per booking, which sounds private and is not: the page invites you to join a small group.2

A group day you can fill yourselves

The Kemijärvi resort’s day with a professional fisherman runs for four to eight adults.3 The page does not promise exclusivity, but a party of eight takes every place, and a party of four to seven can ask whether others will be added.

Private by default

A Posio lake on your own is the one version nobody else can join, and the licence rule that makes it free is on ice fishing in Posio.

Questions people ask

Can a smaller party ride alone on the Salla trip?

Partly. Salla's ice fishing safari prices a snowmobile sledge for one person at 184 euros against 141 euros each when two share one, so a single traveller can have a sledge to themselves. That buys your own seat on the ride to the wilderness pond, not your own guide or your own pond: the page does not say the safari is run for one party, so expect other guests on the ice.

Is there a private photographer who could come fishing with us?

Posio's tourist information names two companies for guided nature photography, Posio Nature and Nordic Wildscape, but neither publishes an ice fishing outing, and the first company's site refused our request when we tried to read it. If a photographer on the ice matters more than the fishing, ask them directly; nothing published says whether they would.

What do we give up by going alone instead?

Mostly the gear and the judgement. The Kemijärvi resort's guided trips include outdoor clothing and, on the lake trip, licences and equipment, and the evening trip teaches you to drill through the ice. Alone you need an auger, rods, warm layers and a local who can tell you which bay is safe that week. What you keep is the whole lake to yourselves, for nothing.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
