Best husky tour in Salla: one pick for each kind of visitor

The short answer

For a first ride with everything lent, book the wilderness park's two hours. If two hours sounds too short, its four-hour safari gives the same dogs twice the time on the trail. If you would rather have the dogs and the guide to your own party, book the private run at the family kennel, and bring warm clothes of your own.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Wilderness park: 2 hoursWilderness park: 4 hoursFamily kennel: private
Suits A first ride, all gear lent Riders who want more trail A party that wants the dogs to itself
Who else is there Up to 20 guests Up to 20 guests Your group only
Winter clothing Lent Lent Your own
Season 1 Dec–15 Apr 1 Jan–31 Mar Winter, by appointment

Nothing is ranked: a longer ride is not a better one for a first-timer, and a private one is not better for a family that likes company. Prices are on the husky price page for Salla.

Where these figures come from
  • Wilderness park: 2 hours: Scheduled departures from the village with winter clothing lent, two to a sled and swapping halfway.
  • Wilderness park: 4 hours: The same park and dogs for twice as long, from January to March, with a longer day and lunch also sold.
  • Family kennel: private: About ten kilometres for one group of two to six at a time, by appointment, with a hut stop halfway.

Salla’s husky rides come from two kennels that run them in different ways, so the choice is about the kind of outing more than the dogs.

A first ride

Salla Wilderness Park lends overalls, boots and mittens, gives a driving lesson and sends two to a sled, swapping places halfway, on two-hour departures in the morning and afternoon from December to mid April.1 It is the ride to book if you have brought nothing for the cold.

More time on the trail

The same park sells four hours with the dogs from January to March, and a five- to six-hour day with lunch.2 It suits riders who found two hours too short elsewhere.

Your own group

Sallan Huskyt, a family kennel on a farm outside the village, takes one group of two to six at a time by appointment, on about ten kilometres of trail with a stop at a hut halfway.3 Come in your own warm clothing.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Can we book the park's ride as a couple?

The park runs its safaris for a minimum of four participants, so a couple joins other guests on a departure that has enough people, and a quiet week may not have one. Book as early as you can and ask whether your date already has others booked. The family kennel takes groups from two, which suits a couple who want certainty.

Which is closer to where we are staying?

The wilderness park is at Poropuistontie in the village, and the family kennel is on a farm about five kilometres from the village and fifteen from the Sallatunturi fell resort. Neither page mentions pickup, so plan on driving yourselves or arranging a taxi, and check the road in heavy snow.

Do we see puppies?

At the family kennel, often: its page mentions meeting the Siberian huskies and seeing the puppies. The wilderness park's husky page does not mention puppies. Litters depend on the season and the dogs, so treat puppies as a bonus rather than something to book on, and ask when you make the reservation.

Lapland Handbook Staff

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
