Family husky safari from Kilpisjärvi: what children can do

The short answer

With children under twelve, the kennel in Hetta is the one that plans for them: it prints a child fare from age three and sells a sled a guide drives, so a parent need not steer with a child aboard. The Skibotn day from the village is easier to reach but says nothing about children, so ask before booking. The Muonio private safaris carry children as passengers and let nobody under fifteen drive.

For a family, the right husky day from Kilpisjärvi is the one the children can join and also reach.

Where children fit

Hetta sets out its child rules plainly: a child fare on every safari, ages three to twelve on the longer ones, and a sled a guide can drive so that a parent is free to hold on to a small passenger.1 The Muonio company carries children as passengers in a parent’s sled and asks that small ones have an adult with them.2 The Skibotn listing mentions neither ages nor children.3

The journey is part of the day

Skibotn is three quarters of an hour away on the operator’s bus, which is the gentlest journey on offer. Hetta is 132 minutes by car and Muonio 145, so a family day there is four to five hours of road around the safari, which is worth weighing against a young child’s patience as much as against the price.

The four options are set out for everyone on husky safari in Kilpisjärvi.

Questions people ask

Will the children be warm enough on the Skibotn day?

The listing includes an insulated bodysuit, shoes, gloves and headwear, without saying whether children's sizes are carried. Ask for your children's sizes when booking, and bring their own warm layers to wear underneath in any case. The day also includes a hot meal, which helps with young passengers on a cold morning in the valley.

Can a teenager drive the dogs?

In Muonio, from fifteen: the private company there says drivers must be at least that age and fit enough to handle the team. Hetta's child fare covers ages three to twelve on its longer safaris, and its pages do not set a minimum age for steering in our records, so ask before promising a thirteen-year-old the runners. The Skibotn listing gives no age for driving.

Is there anything shorter for small children in Kilpisjärvi itself?

Not with dogs. What the village does sell for children who are too young for a long trip is a sledge ride behind a guide's snowmobile, with the Three-Country Cairn as the goal, but those tours set their own minimum ages of eight or ten. For a first meeting with animals close to home, the reindeer visits in the village are the other option.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
