Private northern lights tour in Utsjoki: how to get one

The short answer

Email the village company and ask for its private evening with a local photographer: it is the only private aurora tour offered in Utsjoki, and its price is quoted on request. If you would rather book something with a fixed price, the shared evenings here are small anyway, and Saariselkä, about two and a half hours south, publishes private tours priced per vehicle.

There is no private aurora tour in Utsjoki with a price on it. There is one you can ask for.

The evening on request

The village company offers a private northern lights evening with a local photographer, and asks you to request it by email.1 It publishes no price and no group size for it, so the useful thing to send is the size of your party, the nights you have and whether the photographs are the point.

Small groups by default

On the booking platform, the same company describes all its tours as small groups or private tours.2 That is not a promise of privacy, but it does mean a shared evening here is not a coachload. The shared evening itself is described on northern lights in Utsjoki.

Questions people ask

How small are the shared evenings?

The Karigasniemi hotel's snowmobile evening runs for two to eight people. The village company's booking-platform listing says its tours are always small groups or private tours, without a number. The holiday village gives no group size for its aurora evening. A party of two booking a quiet week may well end up alone, but none of the three promises it.

Why would a photographer be worth asking for?

Because it is the one thing the shared evenings do not include. The village company's shared minivan evening lists warm drinks, snacks and spare clothing, and says nothing about photographs; the private evening is offered specifically with a local photographer. If pictures of your party under the aurora matter, that is the reason to write rather than book the shared tour.

Is it worth driving to Saariselkä for a private tour?

Only if you are going that way anyway. Saariselkä is 149 minutes from Utsjoki by road, so a private tour there means five hours in the car on top of the evening itself, and this site's Saariselkä page compares its private tours by vehicle size. From a bed in Utsjoki, the request to the village company is the shorter route to the same thing.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
