The best Santa Claus visit from Inari, by the kind of trip you want

The short answer
If you are in Inari for a few days in late November or December and want a short, personal meeting without a drive, book the Santa visit at the hotel in the village. If you want the whole Christmas trip arranged, look at the same hotel's Santa package. For a full afternoon with reindeer, an elf and baking before the meeting, drive to Saariselkä. Keep Rovaniemi for a trip built around Santa.

There is a Santa in Inari, though no booking platform lists him. A hotel in the village sells the meeting on its own site, and there are three other ways to go about it within a day’s reach.
A meeting in the village
The hotel’s Santa visit is the meeting and nothing else: a short walk to Santa’s secret place and a private talk with him, with a small present for everyone.1 It is the one to book if you are in Inari anyway and want the meeting itself, without an afternoon around it or a drive.
A Christmas stay built around it
The same hotel sells a three- or four-night Christmas package, made for families with younger children, that fetches you from Ivalo airport, lends winter clothing, fills the days with a husky ride, reindeer, a snowmobile trip and an evening looking for the aurora, and includes the meeting with Santa.2 It suits a family who would rather not plan anything.
An afternoon in Saariselkä
Saariselkä’s programme is a different shape: two and a half to three hours with an elf, baking gingerbread, meeting reindeer and riding in a sleigh, with about ten minutes in Santa’s cabin at the end.3 It is under an hour’s drive, and the better choice for children who will enjoy the build-up as much as the meeting. The programme itself is described on Santa Claus in Saariselkä.
Rovaniemi
The Santa Claus office in Rovaniemi costs nothing to walk into,4 but it is almost four hours away by car. It makes sense for a trip built around Santa, as meeting Santa Claus in Rovaniemi sets out, not as a day out from Inari.

Questions people ask
Do we have to stay at the hotel to book its Santa visit?
The hotel's page does not say. It lists the visit among its activities and asks you to book it through its sales team by email, without saying that it is for hotel guests only. If you are staying elsewhere in the village, ask in the same email, before you plan the rest of the day around it.
Can the children send Santa a letter beforehand?
Yes, and the hotel suggests it. Families are asked to hand letters written to Santa to the reception, in confidence, at least one day before the meeting, so that he can read them in advance and make the conversation personal. The Saariselkä programme works the same way by email: a questionnaire arrives before the day so you can tell Santa about the children.
In what language does Santa speak with the children?
The Saariselkä programme says its elf guides in English. The hotel says all the activities in its Christmas package are guided group trips with an English-speaking guide, but its page for the Santa visit does not name a language for Santa himself. If your children do not speak English, say which language they speak when you book, whichever you choose.
