Private husky tour in Utsjoki: small farm, shared ride

The short answer

Do not expect a private booking off the shelf. The village company's rides share sleds and need at least two people, and the holiday village seats two to a team; neither prints a private price. Ask the village company for a private date; it answers questions and takes bookings by email. If a guaranteed private visit matters more than the drive, the nearest one on sale is a family farm visit at Ivalo, two hours south.

The word private turns up on the husky pages in Utsjoki, and it is easy to read too much into it.

The farm is private, the ride is shared

The village company takes its guests to a small, private husky farm on the Norwegian bank of the Teno.1 That describes who owns the dogs, not who else is on the trail: its rides seat guests on shared sleds, and its terms ask for at least two people on every programme.2 The holiday village’s safari puts two people to a team and prints no private option at all.

Getting as close to private as you can

Two people booking together meet the village company’s minimum on their own, and at the holiday village a family of four fills two teams. What neither seller publishes is a price for keeping the date to yourselves, so ask the village company by email before you book.

The nearest private visit on sale

At Ivalo, two hours and five minutes south, a husky farm sells a private visit for your group only, described on husky safaris at Ivalo. The shared rides in Utsjoki are compared on husky safari in Utsjoki.

Questions people ask

Could two of us book the whole ride between us?

The village company's terms set a minimum of two participants for every programme, so two people can make a departure happen, but nothing says the date is then closed to others. It takes bookings and questions by email; ask directly whether it will hold a date for your party alone and what that costs, and get the answer in writing.

Is the Ivalo farm visit really a husky safari?

Not quite. It is a private farm visit of two and a half hours whose sledding is built mainly for children and teenagers from four to seventeen, with short runs behind one or two dogs, and adults can try too. It is the nearest husky outing sold as private, at 235 euros a head, but a family that wants a long run should stay with the rides in Utsjoki.

What does a small farm change for us?

Mostly the pace. The village company sells its rides as husky sledding without mass tourism at a small, private farm, and its rides are booked on request because the farm has to agree each date. So allow up to three days for a confirmation and book well before you arrive rather than on the day; a ride found on arrival may not be confirmed in time.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
