Northern lights tour prices in Oulu

Green aurora arcs over a river bend, with bare trees on the point reflected in the still water

The short answer

Price the evening by the hour out, not by the ticket. The night walk is by far the cheapest hour, the Nallikari camp the cheapest evening that includes clothing, and the driven tours cost more because a car and a guide are yours for longer. Check the booking platform's own price at checkout: the city's programme prints higher figures for two of these tours.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Majakka: night walkNallikari Safaris: campe-Coach: chaseMajakka: driven tour
Price on the platform €63 – the lowest price per person on the booking platform €99 €129 €220
Price in the city programme €90 €99 Not listed €290

Per hour €21 – the lowest price per hour out €49.50 €32.25 €44–73

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest price per person on the booking platform and the lowest price per hour out. Price and price per hour are marked as arithmetic on the platform's figures. The city programme's figures are shown because they differ, not because they are wrong.

Where these figures come from
  • Majakka: night walk: A guided 10 km walk from the market square to Nallikari and back, looking for the aurora on the way.
  • Nallikari Safaris: camp: Two hours in a heated tent on the sea ice, with clothing, snacks and hot drinks included.
  • e-Coach: chase: A four-hour drive from central Oulu to wherever the sky is clearest.
  • Majakka: driven tour: A drive to spots north of the city with a bonfire, snacks and hot drinks and photos.

Oulu’s aurora tours range from a 63-euro walk to a 270-euro photography tour, and the ticket price says little until it is divided by the hours out.

Per hour

On the booking platform, Majakka Outdoors’ three-hour night walk costs 21 euros an hour, e-Coach’s four-hour chase 32.25, the Nallikari camp 49.50 for two hours, and Majakka’s driven tour between 44 and 73 depending on whether it runs three hours or five.1234 Majakka’s private six-hour photography tour, at 270 euros a person, comes to 45 an hour and includes a barbecue.5

Two prices for the same tour

The city’s weekly programme lists the night walk at 90 euros and the driven tour at 290, and sends readers to the same booking platform, where they cost 63 and 220 when we read them.6 The camp costs 99 in both places. We cannot tell which of the two figures is older; the price shown at the platform’s checkout is the one you pay.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Are the struck-through prices real discounts?

The booking platform shows three of Majakka Outdoors' tours with a higher price struck through and a lower one beside it. It does not say how long the lower price lasts, and we cannot tell from outside. Treat the lower figure as today's price, book when it suits you, and do not assume it will be there next month.

Will the price be the same on our date?

Not necessarily. The platform prints each tour as a from price, and the price for your date, time and number of people appears only in the booking calendar. Check the total there before paying, and compare two or three dates if your trip allows, because the from price is the lowest the listing offers, not a promise.

Is it cheaper to book directly with the company?

For one tour, yes, and for another, no. Majakka Outdoors' own page lists the night walk from 45 euros, against 63 on the booking platform, but its driven tour from 230, against 220 on the platform; for a group of eleven or more, the same page lists the driven tour from 80 euros a head. We did not read the other companies' own price lists. If you contact a company directly, compare its quote with the platform's total for the same date before paying.

Lapland Handbook Staff

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
