The short answer

With a two- or three-year-old, book the short ride at the Konijänkkä farm: it sells a child fare from two, the ride is short and ends with feeding the reindeer. With children of four and more and no winter gear, the ride near Ylläsjärvi lends the clothing and is sold for all ages. For older children who will enjoy a longer ride, the wilderness ride gives the most time in the sleigh.

How the operators compare

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Do children sit with a parent in the sleigh?

The listings do not say how the sleighs are shared, only that guests sit in them wrapped in fur blankets on the wilderness ride. With a small child, ask when you book whether you will share a sleigh with them, and how many sleighs there are for your party.

Can a toddler under two come?

The Konijänkkä farm prices children from two, and the other three from four. None of them lists what a younger child pays or whether they can come. The Ylläsjärvi ride says it suits all ages, so that is the one to ask first about a baby. Ask them before you book, not at the farm.

What should children wear?

On the rides near Ylläsjärvi and into the wilderness the winter clothing is lent. The two rides sold by the Konijänkkä operator do not list clothing, so bring the children's own warm layers or ask whether the operator can lend them. Dress them for sitting still, which is colder than walking.
