The short answer

Ask the reindeer farm in the village. Its Santa visit is private by design, it is a walk from the hotels, and a price comes back with the answer rather than in advance. If you need a figure before you commit, the nearest private meeting sold online is in Levi, three and a quarter hours away, at 150 euros a head for about half an hour with Santa inside a two-and-a-half-hour outing.

The only Santa visit in Kilpisjärvi happens to be a private one.

What the farm tells you in advance

A Sámi family runs the reindeer farm in the middle of the village and offers a private Santa visit as part of its winter programme. It is arranged by enquiry only, it cannot be booked online, and neither a price nor a length is published.1 What you know before writing is where it is and that no other family shares it; the price arrives with the answer, so make it the first thing you ask.

The priced alternatives

The nearest private meeting you can book online is in Levi, three and a quarter hours away by road, and Muonio’s private meeting comes only with a Christmas package. Rovaniemi’s own private visits, a long way further, are set out on private Santa visit in Rovaniemi.

Questions people ask

How do we reach the farm to ask?

The farm gives an email address for Santa enquiries on its site, with the subject already filled in, and also a WhatsApp number, and says Santa visits cannot be booked online. Give your dates, the number of people and the children's ages, which is what its general advice asks for, so the answer can include what the farm charges for children.

Is the Levi visit really private?

Its listing says the experience is private, with only one family or group at a time, and gives the meeting with Santa as about 30 minutes within a two-and-a-half-hour outing that includes a sleigh ride. It is priced at 150 euros per person, so a family pays by the head rather than for the booking, which is worth working out before you compare it with the farm's answer.

Is there a private option on a Christmas holiday instead?

In Muonio, two hours and 25 minutes from Kilpisjärvi, the only Santa meeting comes inside a Christmas package of three or four nights, and the package says each family meets Santa on its own in his cabin, with a small gift for every child. It starts at 1,124 euros per person, so it suits a family choosing where to spend Christmas, not one adding an afternoon.

Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
