Snowmobile safari from Oulu: the private sea ride

Slabs of sea ice covered in fresh snow, piled up along a shore under a pale sky

The short answer

Book the private sea ride if you are two adults with driving licences who want the ice to yourselves and would rather not organise the journey: the price is for the pair, and transport to the start is included. If you want a cheaper seat on a shared safari, or have children who would ride in a sledge, the safaris in Kemi are the ones to look at.

The one snowmobile tour listed for Oulu is sold by @rootedlapland as a private ride for your group of up to two, priced for the pair. It crosses the frozen sea among the islands of Sea Lapland and stops at a wilderness hut for a fire and hot drinks, with snowmobile jackets and safety gear lent and transport to the start included. There are two lengths: two and a half hours, or three and a half to four.1 It is the only snowmobile outing among the tours listed for Oulu.2

Who can ride

The listing excludes children under twelve, drivers under eighteen and anyone without a driving licence, and also people over 135 kilograms and those with back or heart problems or recent surgery.1

The alternative

The shared snowmobile safaris compared in snowmobile safaris in Kemi cost a seat each rather than a private machine, and some take children in a sledge behind the guide. Kemi is the nearest place to Oulu with them; the Oulu page gives the drive.

Questions people ask

What happens if the snowmobile is damaged?

The listing says the deductible is 1,300 euros per driver, which is what you pay towards damage before any insurance takes over. Check whether your travel insurance or credit card covers a snowmobile excess before you go, and drive the first minutes slowly while you learn how the machine brakes on ice.

Can the two of us take turns driving?

Yes. The listing says the price for two people includes the option to switch drivers during the ride, under the company's terms and conditions, which the page itself does not print. Ask the guide before you set off where on the route the two of you can swap, and how long each of you can expect to drive.

What if we have to cancel?

The listing allows free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, with a full refund, and not after. As a private booking for two there is nobody else to fill the seat, so if the forecast turns to a storm or one of you falls ill, decide the day before rather than on the morning itself.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
