Private Santa visit from Utsjoki: the nearest ones by drive

The short answer

For the shortest drive and the lowest price for a family of four, book the hotel's visit in Inari, by email. If a sleigh ride to Santa is part of the wish, drive on to the reindeer farm in Ivalo, which prices per group. Save the Saariselkä visits for a family that is staying there anyway or wants a longer visit with transport included.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the shortest drive and lowest family total. The Saariselkä hotel prints no child fare, so its total counts every child at the adult price. The Rovaniemi visits, 320 minutes away, are compared on the Rovaniemi page instead.

Where these figures come from
  • Inari: hotel visit: A short walk to Santa's secret place and twenty to forty minutes with him, booked by email.
  • Ivalo: reindeer farm: A snowmobile-drawn sleigh to Santa's secret spot and twenty minutes with him, priced per group.
  • Saariselkä: resort visit: An hour and a half at Santa's Home for your party alone, with pick-up and drop-off.
  • Saariselkä: forest meeting: An hour with a short car transfer to a private meeting in the forest, priced per person.

Nobody sells a private meeting with Santa in Utsjoki, but the road south has four within two and a half hours.

Inari, the nearest

The hotel in Inari village prices its visit for a family of four and takes bookings by email; its season runs from late November to early January.1

Ivalo, by sleigh

Ivalo Reindeer Farm takes your group by a sleigh drawn by a snowmobile to Santa’s secret spot, and prices the visit for two to four people or for up to eight.2

Saariselkä, a longer visit

The resort gives your party Santa’s Home to itself for an hour and a half with transport,3 and the hotel drives guests a short way to a private meeting in the forest, priced per person.4

The private visits in Rovaniemi, more than five hours away, are compared on private Santa visit in Rovaniemi. The reindeer can be arranged for your party alone closer to home, as private reindeer tour in Utsjoki explains.

Questions people ask

Can we do Inari and back in a day with small children?

Yes, more easily than any other Santa from Utsjoki: about an hour and a half each way around a visit of twenty to forty minutes. Leave early enough to arrive in daylight, since the midwinter days are short, and ask the hotel whether there is somewhere warm to wait if you arrive before your time.

Do any of these visits take bookings from people staying elsewhere?

The Ivalo farm and the Saariselkä resort sell theirs as outings on their own sites, the resort with pick-up and drop-off. The two hotels do not say either way; the Inari hotel takes Santa bookings by email, so ask in the same message whether a family staying in Utsjoki can book.

What if the weather stops us driving on the day?

None of the four pages prints cancellation terms for the Santa visit itself. A long winter drive is exactly the case where a date can fall through, so before paying ask in writing what happens if you cannot arrive, and whether the booking can be moved rather than lost.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
