The short answer

Driving costs less per hour here than being driven. The safari that puts two of you on a machine for about 25 to 30 kilometres works out at 55.08 euros an hour and about 6.50 a kilometre, and it includes a lunch, the clothing and the transfer. A machine to yourself adds 65 euros. The two sleigh evenings cost more per hour and take you out in the dark instead, and one of them is four euros cheaper on the other platform.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest price per person. The two Ivalo Safaris columns are the same trip on two platforms, which state different durations, so only the first is divided by its hours. All four price per person.

Where these figures come from
  • Ivalo Safaris: you drive: About 25 to 30 kilometres along the river and Lake Inari, two to a machine with a swap midway, then reindeer and lunch. The cheapest hour, and the only trail length published here.
  • Ivalo Safaris: the same trip, other platform: Four euros less for what both listings describe as the same shared machine, transfers, thermal clothing and lunch.
  • Primitif Aventure: night sleigh: Three hours seated in a passenger sled with a guide driving, suit and helmet lent. Nobody under ten, but no licence needed either.
  • Ivalo Experiences: wilderness sleigh: Three hours by sleigh to the edge of the Hammastunturi wilderness with sausages and hot drinks, in a group of eight at most. The dearest hour here.

Ivalo turns a rule of thumb upside down. In most resorts the trip where you drive costs more than the one where you sit; here it costs less by the hour, and it is the only one that says how far you go.

What an hour costs

Ivalo Safaris’ safari is 179 euros for 195 minutes, which is 55.08 euros an hour. Primitif Aventure’s night sleigh is 186 for three hours, 62 an hour, and Ivalo Experiences’ wilderness sleigh 199 for three hours, 66.33. The driving safari also publishes a trail of about 25 to 30 kilometres, so it can be read the other way: about 6.50 euros a kilometre, lunch, clothing and transfer included.

What driving alone adds

Sixty-five euros. The driving safari puts two people on a machine and has you swap places midway; a machine to yourself is a supplement its listing leaves out of the price, which takes one ticket to 244 euros. At that point both sleigh evenings are cheaper, and neither asks for a licence.

The same trip at two prices

Ivalo Safaris’ safari appears on two marketplaces at 179 and 175 euros, with the same shared machine, the same transfers, the same thermal clothing and the same lunch in both listings. The cheaper one calls it four hours where the dearer one says 195 minutes, so the durations do not match even though the trip does; that is why only one of them is divided by its hours above.

Who may drive, where each trip goes and what it is like are set out on snowmobile safaris in Ivalo, the aurora evenings on northern lights tour prices in Ivalo, and the rest of the village on the Ivalo destination page.

Questions people ask

What does a machine to yourself cost?

Sixty-five euros a person on the driving safari, which its listing calls a single snowmobile supplement and leaves out of the price. That takes the ticket from 179 to 244 euros, more than either sleigh evening. Two people who share pay 179 each and swap places midway, so the supplement is what it costs to avoid the swap rather than to drive at all.

Are the sleigh evenings cheaper because you do not drive?

No, they are dearer by the hour: 62 euros an hour for the three-hour night sleigh and 66.33 for the wilderness sleigh, against 55.08 for the driving safari. What they save is the licence and the age limit, because a passenger needs neither, and they run after dark with the aurora as a possibility.

Does the same trip cost the same on both platforms?

No. Ivalo Safaris' driving safari is 179 euros on one platform and 175 on the other, with the same shared machine, transfers, thermal clothing and lunch in both listings. Four euros is small, but it is the same trip; check both before booking, and note that the cheaper listing describes it as four hours rather than 195 minutes.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
