The short answer

The figure on the ticket says little on its own. The Ranua park at 119 euros a head buys three hours with clothing, a sauna and the reindeer. The Kemijärvi sleigh ride is the dearest per head at 185 for two hours, with thermal gear and transport from its resort. The Salla day safari costs 167 a head when two share a sledge and lasts five to six hours, the most time for the money. Budget the drive as well, and ask about child fares, which none prints.

Nothing is ranked: one price has no stated basis and the four buy very different lengths of time, so a lowest figure would mislead.

  • Sallatunturin Tuvat: Five to six hours by snowmobile to a reindeer farm in the wilderness, around seventy kilometres, with a soup lunch.

Four reindeer outings are within two hours of Posio, and their prices measure four different things.

What the Ranua ticket buys

The Ranua park opens at 119 euros a head for three hours, and the price covers more than the reindeer: winter outerwear, skating, sledging and a sauna come with it, and it needs two people to run.1

What the dearer tickets add

The Kemijärvi ride costs more for less time, and the difference is the sleigh, the herder and the transport from the resort. The long Salla safari costs less per head than Kemijärvi and lasts longest, so per hour it is the lowest of the three that state a per-person price. The shorter Salla safari opens at the lowest figure of all, but its listing does not say what that figure is for.

What nobody prints

A child fare. Until an operator gives one, a family’s real total is unknown, and this page does not guess it. The choice by kind of party, rather than by price, is on the best reindeer tour from Posio.

Questions people ask

What happens if we have to cancel?

The Ranua park and the Kemijärvi sleigh ride are both sold on a booking platform that refunds in full up to 24 hours before the start. The two Salla safaris are sold on their operators' own sites, and this site's records of them say nothing about cancellation, so ask for the terms in writing before paying, especially for the long safari, where a sledge for one is the dearest booking here.

Is the Salla safari at 116 euros per person?

Its listing does not say. It prints 'from 116 euros' for a three-hour safari in which you drive a reindeer yourself, without stating whether that is for one person, one reindeer or a group. Until the operator confirms it, the figure cannot be multiplied into a total for two, which is why this page leaves that cell open.

What does the drive add to the cost?

This site does not work out fuel costs, which depend on your car. What it can say is the distance: Ranua is 88 kilometres from Posio, Kemijärvi 111 and Salla 123 by road, each way. For a family weighing the Ranua park against Kemijärvi, the shorter drive is part of what makes the cheaper ticket cheaper.
