The short answer

For two adults and two children aged four to eleven, the resort's lake trip is the only one whose family total can be worked out, and licences and clothing are in it. For two adults alone the platform trip is the cheapest, with a 24-hour free cancellation window the resort's own shop does not print. The resort's five-hour day with a professional fisherman costs the most per hour as well as per ticket; what it adds is a sledge ride, lunch and serious fishing time, for a group of four adults.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest total for two adults and a fishing licence included in the price. Totals multiply the published fares only; where no child fare is printed the family total reads Not stated. The professional trip's two-adult figure is shown for comparison but it runs only for four to eight adults.

Where these figures come from
  • Platform trip: Two hours including the drive to a secluded lake, with gear, winter clothing and boots, sold per person on the booking platform.
  • Jauri Resort: lake: Two hours on the lake beside the resort, with licences, equipment, outdoor clothing and a warm drink, and a child fare.
  • Lappi Creative: evening: Two and a half hours of evening fishing by a fire with a hot drink and snacks, at most four people per booking.
  • Jauri Resort: 5 h professional: Five hours with a professional fisherman, a sledge ride to the hole and a campfire lunch, for four to eight adults.

A family’s total for ice fishing in Kemijärvi can be worked out for one trip only, and that trip is not the cheapest for adults.

The family total

The resort’s lake trip prices children aged four to eleven at 35 euros and lets children under three go free, so it is the only trip whose family total the table can show, with licences and clothing included.1 The other trips print an adult fare and nothing for children.

Time for money

The five-hour professional trip costs the most per ticket but buys the most time, with a sledge ride and lunch on top.2 It runs for four to eight adults, so a pair has to join others or bring friends.

Refunds

The platform trip can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before. The resort’s own terms have a heading for cancellation with nothing written under it,3 and the evening trip’s company prints no terms, so get them in writing if you book either directly.

Questions people ask

Do we have to pay the national fishing fee on top?

Not for ice fishing with one rod in most places. Finland's national fishing fee costs 6 euros a day, 16 a week or 47 a year for people aged 18 to 69, but ice fishing with a single rod is exempt from it outside rapids on migratory-fish waters and places with their own permits. Where a lake needs its own permit, ask the company whether it is covered, as it is on the resort's lake trip.

Which trip costs least per hour on the ice?

On the published figures, the platform trip and the evening trip, at about 40 euros an hour each, though the platform trip's two hours include the drive. The resort's lake trip works out at about 42 euros an hour and its five-hour professional day at about 46. The dearest per hour is also the only one that adds a sledge ride to the hole and a campfire lunch.

What happens if the lake ice is not ready?

The resort says its lake trip runs depending on weather conditions and sells it from January to April, and its professional trips have their own seasons. None of the pages prints what happens to a booking if the ice is unsafe on the day. Ask the company before paying whether it refunds or moves the date, and on the platform keep an eye on the 24-hour cancellation window.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
