The short answer

If you want to drive a team yourself and have no winter clothing, book Arctic Wonders' 10 km safari: overalls, boots and gloves are lent and every guest gets a driving lesson. If a pickup from your accommodation matters more and you have your own warm layers, book Arctic SISU, at 5 km for a first ride or 10 km for the full run. Families with small children should look at the SISU rides, which take children from four.

Where these figures come from
  • Arctic SISU: 5 km: A first ride of four to five kilometres with a farm visit and pickup. Adults may share a sled and take turns; small children ride on a lap.
  • Arctic Wonders: 10 km: Ten kilometres driving your own sled after a lesson, with overalls, boots and gloves lent and at most eight guests. Starts from the village office.
  • Arctic SISU: 10 km: The full run of eight to ten kilometres with the chance to drive, a farm visit and pickup. Bring your own winter clothing.

Two companies sell husky sled rides in Sodankylä, and a family farm outside the village sells gentler time with the dogs.

Driving your own sled

Arctic Wonders starts from its office in the village, lends overalls, boots and gloves, gives a driving lesson and takes a group of at most eight on a ten kilometre run, with a hot drink and time with the dogs.

With pickup and a farm visit

Arctic SISU Experience collects you from your address and pairs the ride with a visit to the husky farm. The 5 km ride suits a first time; the 10 km one is the full run. Adults can share a sled and swap, and thermal clothing is not lent. A shorter farm visit with a ten-minute ride costs 205 euros, from age five.

Just the dogs

Huskygorod, a family farm at Vuojärvi on the Rovaniemi road, sells an hour and a half with the dogs for about 41 euros, and a forest hike of two and a half to three kilometres with a husky each for 125, from age ten. Its GetYourGuide listings leave transport out, while its own site includes a minivan from a meeting point, so ask which applies. From this winter it also plans sled rides with child fares, set out in husky safaris with children in Sodankylä.

What makes a husky safari worth its price anywhere is in the Rovaniemi husky safari guide. The rest of the village is on the Sodankylä destination page.

What each step from a farm visit to a ten-kilometre run costs, and what the price leaves out, is set out in husky safari prices in Sodankylä.

Questions people ask

Can two adults share one sled?

On Arctic SISU's rides, yes: the listing says two adults can share a sled, one driving and one sitting, and that conditions decide whether each adult gets to drive. Small children sit on an adult's lap. Arctic Wonders describes every guest driving their own sled, so ask if you would rather ride together.

What should we wear if clothing is not lent?

Arctic SISU marks thermal layers as not included and asks for warm clothing. You stand on the sled runners for up to two hours in the cold, so bring a proper winter jacket and trousers, wool layers, warm boots, a hat and mittens. If you have none, the Arctic Wonders ride is the simpler booking.

Is there anything for a child under four?

The family walk at Huskygorod's farm in Vuojärvi lists no age limit, and costs little: an hour and a half with the dogs, drinks and treats. The forest hike with a husky each starts at ten. Its GetYourGuide listings leave out transport, but its own site includes a minivan from a meeting point, so ask which applies before planning on a car.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
