Muonio: the resorts, the activities and the prices

Almost everything a visitor books in Muonio comes from one family company with three resorts, and its booking engine prints the prices rather than hiding them behind an enquiry form.

Muonio sits in the fell country of western Lapland, on the river that divides Finland from Sweden, and most of what a visitor books here comes from one company. Harriniva Hotels & Safaris has been in the family since 1973 and runs three resorts: Harriniva Adventure Resort on the riverbank, Jeris Lakeside Resort on Lake Jerisjärvi beside Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, and Torassieppi Eco Reindeer Resort at a farm nearly two hundred years old.1

That concentration has one clear advantage for a visitor: the prices are published. Its booking engine lists what is on sale with a figure against each line, where many Lapland operators send you to an enquiry form. On the day we read it, the cheapest thing on that list was a 45-minute husky farm visit at 20 euros and a family ticket for the same visit at 50, and the dearest an 80-euro guided hike of three hours in the national park, with return transfers from Jeris and a picnic snack. In between sat a two-hour visit to the reindeer farm at Torassieppi at 55 euros and the Arctic Sauna World at Jeris at 25, with its own family ticket at 60.

Two things are worth knowing before you plan around those numbers. The first is that every figure is a starting price: the booking engine prints each one as a from-price, and this is the list it showed on the day we read it. The second is the cancellation line, which is unusually strict: a booking cancelled two days or less before the event is charged in full.

Two smaller companies sell outings on their own sites: Nivunki Village runs husky and snowmobile safaris, and Wildmaker Lapland private husky rides and ice fishing for groups of two to five. The activity guides for Muonio set them against Harriniva’s programmes and against the nearest tours in Levi and Ylläs.

Getting there

The nearest airport is Kittilä, about an hour away by road. Most visitors, though, arrive from one of the two big resorts nearby: the operator gives about 50 minutes from Levi to Harriniva and about 35 to Jeris, and about 60 minutes from Ylläs to Harriniva and about 45 to Jeris. The village itself is some 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle by the company’s own reckoning, which puts it well inside the zone where snow is a season rather than a weather event.
