The short answer

For a first run with lent clothing and set departure times, book the wilderness park's two-hour safari, where two share a sled and swap halfway. If you want the dogs to yourselves, book the family kennel's private run and dress for the cold, since it lends nothing. Either way, book a day or more ahead: neither sells places on the spot.

Salla has two places to drive huskies, and they differ in who else is on the trail and what you need to bring.

At the wilderness park

Salla Wilderness Park gives a driving lesson first, then two people share each sled and swap places halfway, so everyone drives. There are hot drinks, sweet buns and a sausage by a fire on the way. The two-hour safari costs 138 euros a person, and the park lends overalls, safari boots and mittens.1

At the family kennel

Sallan Huskyt takes one group of two to six at a time for about ten kilometres, with a break at a kota halfway. It costs 125 euros a person, and there is no clothing to borrow, so come dressed for the cold.2

The two are compared on the best husky tour in Salla, and what makes a husky safari worth its price anywhere is in the Rovaniemi husky safari guide. The rest of Salla is on the Salla destination page.

Questions people ask

Do we both get to drive?

At the wilderness park, yes, if you share a sled: one rides in front, the driver stands behind, and the two swap halfway, but drivers must be over 18. At the family kennel each adult drives after a lesson before the trail. Travelling alone at the park, ask whether you drive the whole way or share with another guest.

When is it available?

The wilderness park runs its two-hour safari from 1 December to 15 April, leaving at half past ten and at two, with longer safaris from January to March. The family kennel runs through the winter by arrangement, one group at a time, so ask it for a date rather than looking for a timetable.

Can children come?

At the wilderness park children from three ride as passengers at half price and must come with an adult. The family kennel takes children from five, with a lower child price up to twelve, and asks everyone to bring warm clothes, which matters most for a child sitting still in the sled.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
