Best Santa Claus visit in Ylitornio for your family

The short answer
For a lively day with several things to do and a lower price, choose the Santa station. For a quiet visit in which your children have Santa's full attention, choose Santa's River House, which reserves a time for your family alone. If the only goal is to meet Santa and you do not mind the drive, the Rovaniemi office costs nothing and is about an hour and a half away.
Ylitornio offers two very different ways to meet Santa, both in the same municipality.
For a busy day out: the station
The Santa station sells a day rather than an appointment, with gingerbread, crafts and reindeer around the meeting, at a lower price than the house. It suits a family that wants several things to do and does not mind sharing the room.1 What the ticket covers is set out on Santa Station in Ylitornio.
For a quiet, personal visit: the house
Santa’s River House, a log house on the Tornio river, reserves a time for your family and friends alone.2 It suits shy children, children with long lists of questions and adults who want to talk, and it costs about twice as much per head.
When Rovaniemi wins
If the meeting is all you want, the office in Rovaniemi is free to walk into and about an hour and a half away, as meeting Santa Claus in Rovaniemi explains. The private visit in Ylitornio is described in full on private Santa visit in Ylitornio.
Questions people ask
Can we do both visits in one day?
Both are in Ylitornio, so it is possible on paper: the River House visit lasts an hour and a half by its own site, and the station ticket is valid for the day. Book the River House first, because it runs to a reserved time, and fit the station around it. Neither says anything about combining the two, and a double dose of Santa may be one too many for a small child.
Which one is better for teenagers or adults?
The River House describes itself as a place for couples, friends and adults as well as children, and says its hosts adapt the visit to the guests' ages, with adults often chatting about local life and traditions. The station is built around children's activities. For older guests the house is the more natural fit, and for a group of adults it is the only one that says so.
Do either of them open outside the Christmas season?
Neither publishes its full opening calendar on the pages this site read. The River House's booking page offered dates from late November, and its cancellation terms speak of the same winter season, while the station's own site gives no dates at all. Check both calendars for your dates before planning the trip around them.
