Northern lights in Muonio: what you can book, and how

The short answer

If you are booking a stay at a Muonio resort anyway, take the aurora evening that comes with the package and choose the package by the format: the car tour suits a family with children from seven, snowshoes and the snowmobile tour suit older children and adults. If you are staying elsewhere in Muonio and want one evening without a package, drive to Ylläs or Levi, where single evenings are sold with a published price.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Minimum age 7 12 7 (driver 18 with a licence) 4

All four are run by the same resort company in Muonio. None printed a price of its own on the reading date, which is why there is no price row.

Where these figures come from
  • By car: Three hours in a car or minivan, the guide choosing the direction from the weather and aurora forecasts, with a hot drink.
  • On snowshoes: About two hours walking on snowshoes through forest and open ground at night, with a guide.
  • By snowmobile: A guided night ride sharing a snowmobile in pairs and taking turns at the handlebars, with children in the guide's sled.
  • On foot to a fire: A guided evening walk to a campfire away from the village lights, with warm drinks and biscuits by the fire.

Muonio’s aurora evenings are run by its resorts, and on the day this page was written none of them could be bought on its own. The resort’s booking engine listed its summer and year-round products and nothing for the night sky,1 and the four formats appear instead as activities inside packages.

Four ways to wait for the sky

By car is the one that moves: the guide reads the forecasts and drives towards clearer weather, for three hours, from age seven.2 The snowshoe walk and the snowmobile tour put you out in the dark under your own power, and the campfire walk is the gentle one, open to children from four.

What a package changes

The resort’s Christmas aurora package starts at 1,005 euros a head for three or four nights and includes the evenings by snowmobile and by car.3 What it costs per evening cannot be read from that figure, since it also buys the bed, the meals, the clothing and the transfers.

If you only want one evening

Drive to Ylläs or Levi. The single evenings sold there, and their prices, are compared on northern lights in Ylläs and northern lights in Levi. The rest of Muonio is on the Muonio destination page.

Questions people ask

Do we need our own winter clothing?

Not with a resort package: the packages include warm winter clothing for the whole stay, which the resort lists as an overall, snow boots with woollen socks, a balaclava and warm gloves. You still bring your own base and middle layers. The single evenings in Ylläs and Levi also lend a winter outfit, so on either route the heavy gear is taken care of.

Can I drive a snowmobile on my own on the aurora tour?

Yes, for an additional charge; the standard arrangement is two to a snowmobile, taking turns at the handlebars, and the listing does not say what the solo supplement costs, so ask when you book. Teenagers from fifteen ride with a parent or with the guide rather than in the sled, which matters when you work out how many machines a family needs.

How far is the nearest aurora evening I can simply buy?

Ylläs and Levi are each about 46 minutes from Muonio by road. Ylläs has a two-and-a-half-hour evening at a fire under the sky from 70 euros a head, suitable for all ages, and Levi a three-hour campfire evening from 92 euros. Both include winter clothing, but neither collects from Muonio, so you drive there and back in the dark.

What happens if it is cloudy?

The resort's terms promise no refund for cloud: they say only that any programme may be changed or cancelled for weather or safety reasons. Its package pages say sightings cannot be guaranteed and suggest adding an extra aurora night, since several evenings give more chances of a clear one.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
